Steering Gear Replacement

So, how did the installation go? Notice a difference with the new bushings?

Thanks

Install went fine - - it was hard doing the bushings, but followed the advice and drilled out the old one and then used a saber saw w/ a metal blade and cut a groove in the outer metal part and they came right out - - did screw up using an inpact wrench and messed up the new bolt, so I put the old one back in and went up to ACE hardware in Robertsdale, AL and they had the 9/16" bolt it takes. so then it was back to Summerdale to put in the new bolt with a socket and rachet this time.

I still felt loose, on the drive to Franklin, North Carolina (never had any bounce) but I found a tie rod end with alot of slop (the one at the pitman arm) replaced that, then found the tie rod on the drag link wasn't good either so replaced the drag link. Stopped at Geno's on the way north and picked up a BD steering box stabilizer and installed that as well.

Front end feels better but it still feels loose, so since I'm probably gonna' need ball joints, and I went through replacing the front wheel bearings on my '01 at a cost of almost $700. 00 each side, plus the wrecker bill (got stuck in Chicago that time) I've decided to go with the Solid Axel (Synteck sp) system an we are after the 1st of September, headed to Ohio where the front bearings will be replaced with greasable ones and lockout hubs installed. MAD 4WD in Portland, Ohio is going to do the work and I'm going to have then put new ball joints in at the same time. Hope to gain a little mileage and well as having all new front end parts installed.

All pre '08 third gen. HD 4X4 Rams have faulty front end geometry. Under the TSB, Dodge is supposed to correct the problem with '08 parts. If you can demonstrate DW during a road test, they claim they will replace them. If you can't, then you have to destroy your front first. Dodge would much rather have you pay for the tie rod etc. and labor. Seems to me this is a lot more serious than Toyota's accelerator problems. Chrysler must have better lobbyists.

Come on now, that's a bit of a stretch don't you think? To date I've never heard of anyone being killed by Death Wobble.

Some of you Dodge bashers might not realise there are other vehicles that get death wobble too.

My truck got death wobble even after I prophylactically upgraded my front end with the Carli upgrade kit, steering box brace and the Dodge 08 inverted T style linkage. So far I've also changed the control arms, wheel bearings and the linkage again and also tightened up the steering box and I still get a shaking occasionally but not death wobble yet. I'm due for tires soon so we'll see what that does.

Even though the front end could be better I'd still buy another Dodge (as long as it's got a Cummins under the hood). Also worth noting is the front axle and its lame ball joint design happens to be a Chevy part (though indirectly, AAM was Chevy corporate once upon a time)<O:p</O:p

Try another argument!!! That sounds like a traffic engineer saying that no one has been killed at the intersection yet and until someone dies were not going to install a traffic light. What happened to an ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure---and I don't care what make of vehicle your talking about!!!!#@$%!

Your statements are not accurate :-laf

Maybe you should read the TSB ;)
