With much trepidation I purchased a '96 3500 4x4. The truck is a 5 spd and was all stock. I read as much as I could on the front suspension issues and saw a lot of different theories. I am adding mine as it is a bit different. This may be a long post and I am sorry, but it may help someone out there.



I bought my truck from of all people, a 17 year old high school kid. He loved the truck but couldn't afford the diesel anymore. He hinted at some front suspension issues and even added a disclaimer in the receipt that he was not responsible after the date of sale!



Driving the truck compared to my '98 2500 2wd was, in a word, different. My 2wd was a one finger affair driving at 70mph whereas this was a two handed affair "guiding" it between the lane dividers. I wouldn't have called it scary but it was far from what I was used too.



Coming home, I drove over a bridge expansion joint and the front of the truck tried to separate itself from the rest of vehicle. A bit unnerving, but I figured this was the dreaded shake associated with the track bar. A quick check got me back on my way. without issue.



Now prior to doing any fix, in the subsequent days, the only way that I could recreate the shake was on an off-camber section of road with a pothole or something like that effecting only one wheel. So the problem wasn't that big.



My first fix was having the front hubs gone thru with the u joints replaced as one of the joints was completely shot. In addition, while everything was apart, I put a 2" leveling kit in to correct the sag in the front, (I had also read this cured the wobble in one case). BTW the ball joints were assessed and found good.



The truck was now unsafe to drive after this was done. It would go into the death wobble at the slightest provocation. It also had a very numb feeling in steering which was new.



Next was the Luke's link to shackle the joint. I drove the truck after the fix and it still wobbled. Sure enough the luke's link needed more tightening. It took three test drives to take all the slack out of the link. (A little side note here: I installed the link with the tires on the ground which yes was easier, but next time I would lift the front end and wouldn't have to drive it to take the slack out).



The link worked really good. It was pretty close to my 98 in terms of steering effort and response. But I would still get the occasional death wobble on off-camber roads where one wheel was effected by a bump.



Next and finally, I bought new tires (Firestone A/T's 235/85R16) all the way around as the old ones were serviceable but old. Sure enough since then, I have not had a issue with the wobble at all!



So here is my Hypothesis.



1. ) I think that at 160K there are a variety of components that have worn producing slack throughout the system.



2. ) Here is where I diverge from what I have read so far. I am speculating that the spring rate of the coils on these truck is relatively high and over time due to compression, that spring rate may become marginally higher due to compression. I think this may account for the "bounce" felt in the wobble. My "bounce" became significantly worse by adding the 2" levelling kit, (further increasing the spring rate).



3. ) My old tires compounded this effect due to the aging of the rubber, making it stiffer, (When I deflated the front tires from 60 psi to 40 psi I all but eliminated the wobble before I even did the first fix!).



4) I need new shocks! At 160K I am sure the dampening effect of my shocks is gone which seems to me would aggravate a higher spring rate of the coils.



I am by no means a engineer, suspension specialist or even mechanic. I may be way off on this idea... But, as of yet even without the new shocks in place, I have yet to experience the death wobble with the above simple fixes. I can still feel a little something when I hit a bump just right.....



Weigh in with your thoughts and comments. I hope this may help someone who is struggling with this. I know I was getting pretty nervous as I started to rule out the big things I had heard caused the wobble.

Death wobble is usually caused by the track bar (most common) it can also be caused by bad shocks both have been causes at seperate times for my truck. The one common thing is a worn out part no matter what it might be. you must first make sure that all front end parts are in proper working order.
 
I have never experienced death wobble or anything like it in 250K miles on my '98. First 60K were on stock Goodrears, the rest on 19. 5" load range F tires. Anyone who knows me can attest that I don't drive like a grandpa or grandma.

A little more technical theory of death wobble. All front suspension parts have a little play or give in them, even when brandy new. Over time, they can get looser. If you happen to hit the right bounce at the right speed with the right tire pressure, you can set parts to moving in resonance, which is what the death wobble is. Tire tread and wheels move out of sync. Wheels and tie rods move out of sync. Tie rods and steering gear move out of sync. Track bar and axle move out of sync. Track bar and frame move out of sync.

There isn't just one thing that causes it. It's a whole slew of stuff. You might not think your tire rod ends are worn much, but when combined with other parts that are worn a little, you get death wobble. I might even go so far as to say that wheels with 'incorrect' offset can contribute. Running load range D tires might contribute; the system was designed for at least load range E.

The front end is designed as a system with a certain amount of tolerance for changes. You go outside those tolerances and you run the risk of throwing the system into a contra-indicated resonance.

Many may be the causes of death wobble. Envision what's happening and what might be allowing the resonance to occur. Then you'll have a better idea what to fix or repair.
 
Check the back lash in your stering box I found mine while not too bad, when it was tightened up it made a world of diffrence... ... .
 
Agree it can be any one thing, or a combination of things on different trucks. I had severe death wobble on my 95 2500 4x4. I replaced everything I could think of in the front end, new tires (BFG E rated all terrains) with precision alignment, new Bilstein shocks, new steering damper, new Moog ball joints, all new steering linkage and tie rod ends, solid steel 3rd gen track bar kit, and STILL was experiencing the death wobble. When I replaced the control arms, upper and lower, with new aftermarket (DT) units and polyurethane bushings the wobble finally disappeared. I have a VERY stable front end now, but it was a major PITA to get there. Your truck could be, and likely is different.

I purchased my current truck in Aug 07, Every tie rod end and track bar was worn out and had play, never experience the Death wobble. My shop truck a 98 CC solid axel front end that was in good shape would have the wobble about once a month. Who knows what causes it. IMO I don't believe it is one thing, but number of different factor.

I think a good steering stabilizer (lateral shock absorber) goes a long way towards a stable front end. Slack may still exist in one or more places in the system, but the stabilizer/s don't give it a chance to resonate and build up to the death wobble level. JMHO.
 
Death Wobble

I get it bad on my 05, It only does it when I put my stock tires and wheels on for the winter, never does it when i have my 35's on. Truck seems to get more bounce with stock tires for some reason. ( 265's vs 35's who knew! :-laf)I have a leveling kit is all. I am almost 100 percent sure its my shocks.

i had a good friend with a leveling kit on an '03 and the kit caused it ...



he got it aligned and the guy at the alignment said he needed more caster i believe ...



after alignment he never had the problem again ...



as stated above i think each case can have a different cause
 
CORRECT alignment is the best place to start.

That includes checking for loose parts, and 6-8* of positive caster.
 
Here is another thing to consider.....



Recently while getting ready for some shows I found my shocks not what I wanted underneath for looks. So I ordered a new set of Bilstein 5100's and while at it I decided I wanted to double shock the front. With that we used a BDS kit and instead of using their shocks I also used a Bilstein 5100 on the outside also.



After we did the install and I drove the truck I was really surprised at how much better the truck handled. It was sure footed on the road and those small nagging annoying bumps,which used to cause the truck to skitter around,did not affect it at all. After now driving the truck all Summer long with them I have realized that these trucks do not have enough shock up front when running a standard single shock. Not enough shock will cause many things as will worn or tired shocks. These trucks always seem to wear out the left front shock way before the right front for some odd reason. When I see the posts on death wobble I wonder how many overlook the shock package they are currently using.



I know this,with how my truck drives now around town and on long trips I have made my mind up the next set of shocks will be a larger diameter rebuildable,especially up front... ..... Andy
 
I never had it until I replaced all the linkage on my 2000 with 1999 linkage. I also replaced the gearbox with the 3 turn unit. I replaced the trackbar with the 2003 type using the solid steel mount. First time I drove it, hit a bump at 60 mph and thought it was going to shake apart. I am scheduled to take it back to the alignment shop tomorrow and if they can't stop it, I may put all the old linkage and track bar back in.
 
Took to alignment shop. They set toe in to . 03 both sides. It was toed out on left side about 2 degrees. Caster-camber were correct. So all is well for now.
 
After several parts and time I found out my DW was from an alignment issue. The shop set the caster at the max positive limit. and it cured it. Didn't mater what tires I had or all the new parts in the front end.
