How about a Dieselfest in Grand Rapids,Michigan?

chapter

Hi all, I just got home from the December Dieselfest at Glenn Thomas Dodge in Long Beach, Calif. The weather was perfect, not a cloud in the sky, temperature in the mid 70’s. There was definitely a higher turnout than last year. I don’t want to guess how many trucks were there, if I can get some facts and figures, I’ll post them.
I got to meet a lot of "regulars" from this board: HVAC, Scott1, Evan Beck, Benson Ricks, Mike Sisk, and a few others whose names escape me right now (sorry I forgot them). Scott1 was showing off his "Psychotty" air filter. That was a real attention-getter.
There were many vendors selling their wares, among them from this website were Roy & Bernita Rothlisberger of Mag-Hytec, Joe Donnelly and Mark Chapple with TST, Piers and Brian with B-D Performance. I’m just writing this off the top of my head, there were many other vendors there… Turbonetics was showing off their new turbo with an in-cab adjustable boost control… Pete Pizzola had a table and was selling, among other things, a silicon heater & radiator hose kit (I’ve got one on my truck)… Mr. Bob’s Distributing (Roadmaster Active Suspension). There were many others, but I apologize, I don’t have them all listed here. I was awfully busy out in the "show ‘n shine" area!
Robert Patton, the editor of the TDR was there, as well as TDR staffers Scott Dalgleish (a BIG THANKS to him, he was the one who organized this whole thing!), Greg Whale, and John & Polly Holmes, the organizers of the annual May Madness event.
There were lots of door prizes given out, as well as awards for the trucks entered in the show. If I may be allowed to brag here… my truck won "Best Engine" and "Best ’94 and up 4X4!" I got a beautiful black leather jacket with the Cummins logo on it! If I can get the names of the winners of the other categories, I’ll post them. There were many trucks that were super-detailed, and I figured the competition was gonna be close.
Anyway, I had a blast, and I met so many people that I got a lot of them mixed up and forgot a lot of names. Almost everyone I talked to, including the names listed above, said "Oh, yeah! I’m DEFINITELY going to May Madness!" So there you have it! If you haven’t attended a rally (big or small), you’re missing a chance to meet a lot of really great people and check out some awesome trucks. Check in the TDR issue 26 on page 101 for the sign up form for the May Madness in Minden, Nevada. Also on page 100 is the info for the "Sandia Showdown" in Belen, N. M. , next March. Come and join the fun!

Thanks for the update, Andy! Been hoping one of ya would tell the rest of us. Did Evan get pictures of the Scotty system? Wonder if that rude guy was the same one that you met up here at the gas station? #ad
Too bad we don't know who it is, we could ban him from being a member of BOMB!

Evan was snappin' pictures all over the place, and he parked his truck next to Scott1's, so people could see the "Scotty" vs. the "Psychotty" filters.
As for the rude guy, I never encountered any. I had a great time! There were lots of friendly people, and I got a lot of complements on my truck.
BTW, after I wrote the above posting, I found out from Scott Dalgleish that there were about 375 trucks there!!

Andy,

Too bad I'm sooo far from Long Beach--must have been a blast---an "all star cast"!

I'm already signed up for May Madness. John & CVI already have my money!!! Really looking forward to meeting you guys. (I already met you, Andy, at the Mag-Hytec table at the TDR Natonals. )

Maybe by then the new 6 speed will be well on it's way towards being broken in!!

Hi everyone, I just wanted to say thanks to all of the people involved with the Dieselfest event, you made my first event a very pleasurable one. I really enjoyed being able to meet Evan, Andy, Scott, HVAC, and a few others. I just have to say there were a lot of great trucks and people there. Anyhow just wanted to say thanks.

Andy, did get to c u get ur 'wards. Was luking 4 u guys & Evans trk. Didnt c any till your awrd. Was fun and $$'s, got the rear cvrd yesterday. TST did give me prob but they get nutter chance in March.

Hated all the accidents/closures on 605/405/15. But still got there by 9am.

Did hear one straight exhaust and liked it. Hope Evan comes to Sandia Showdown -- U HERE me Evan?

Liked the drain valve for the oil pan that the Cummins race rep had. Will put that in this week (oil change now due 7k+). Most expensive part of trip was the return stop in Laughlin (even tho your fuel priced @ 1. 499 wasnt great).

Take care and thanks for the FUN!!! p. s. Glad I didnt get to meet RUDIE!

PS: In additiion to Porky's post below, they just need to supply the tag - ifn we can type on the board I think (oopps!) we can rite r nams on a pce of papr. Of course they could print up the preregistered or competing persons name (I know how much trouble tis is - been there done that) tags or have a printer avail at registration (takes too long - lie this additional posting to the original posting).

I also attended the dieselfest and had a great time!!! Just one suggestion to the big wheels that plan these events, especially the TDR events: Please insure that you have nametags available, preferably with the posting names above our real names!! It would have been great to be able to "recognize" our fellow TDR members!!!

PS. What a feast!!!!! Sam

Sam,

You have a good idea there, but unfortunately we don't track the usernames along with your real names. I know at the nationals we had name tags, so if/when they are provided at your next event, just add your "handle" to it.

Also brings up this point -- each issue of the TDR will have some of the best of the board. As such, you may see your internet posting in print. But there is a catch. I need your real name to put them in any future issues. So for you guys with the "handles", please put your real name in your signature if you would like your posts to be considered, for the "best of" in future issues.

Andy, Is there any way to see a picture of your truck? I always like to see an awesome dressed up Ram. A 1st place Ram sounds even better. Is it possible to post a picture or something?

It's on the cover of one of the recent issues. #24 I think. Really nice truck. I saw it at May Madness.

Thanks for all the complements on my truck, y'all. It's a fun (but expensive) hobby. Someone once said, "There's a fine line between a hobby and an obsession. "
My truck is being retired from the shows, because I'm moving to a rural area and I'll be living in a trailer (I will be off-line for a while, too) on a gravel road, with no driveway (just mud), garage, workbench, etc. My truck will have to be used for a daily 120 mile commute in the rain, snow, mud, and gravel until I can buy a 2nd vehicle. It's been a lot of fun entering my truck in these shows. I'll still be at the May Madness, but I'll be a spectator.
This board has a lot of great people and I've made a lot of friends. I hope you all have a great holiday season, and I'll see you around.
Andy
(BTW, Peter, no, I never bought a Pro-Zap. )

Hi Andy, I here what you're saying about not competing as a show truck. Anyone who's read my website knows I think there should be seperate divisions for daily drivers and real-life work trucks to compete in show and shines.

Amen to that Mark!

My truck is used to haul all sorts of things including gravel so it has a few scars. I had a lot of fun showing it off at last year's May Madness but I knew that it didn't have a chance against the show quality trucks.

That's fine and dandy about Dieselfest but I'm a little worried Evan... I haven't heard from him all week! Hey buddy! Are you still out there? You didn't detour to Reno and get married on the way back or something did you????? #ad

Joe, my truck is "show quality" because of a LOT of elbow grease and because I have spent a fortune on it! It has been a daily driver since day one, and it's the only vehicle I own. It sits outside all the time, because it's too tall and too long for the garage. That can make it tough to get it cleaned up for a show or to perform maintenance on it, because I always have to have it in running condition to get to work every afternoon. I understand what you're saying, but my truck is not treated like a vintage T-bird that sits in the garage and is only driven one Sunday a month. At the Dieselfest, I was glad that nobody paid much attention to the underside of the truck, because all they'd see is mud and rust. David Caldwell, who had the super clean black dually next to mine, spent half the day at the Dieselfest on a creeper, wiping down his frame and drivetrain. I wish I could have cleaned mine underneath and re-painted a bunch of parts, but I just plain ran out of time. I didn't bother crawling under it at the show, because I wouldn't have enjoyed the show that way. The wheels were heavily oxidized, because I hadn't polished them since May. They're bare aluminum, and I polished all five of them BY HAND in the days before the show, which lead to some pretty sore muscles! I never got a chance to polish the Northwest Custom diamond plate mudflaps, and it was a panic to get the truck ready for the show.
When I started fixing up this truck, I had no intention of it becoming a "prima donna" show truck. I wanted to build it into a practical, general purpose camping truck with lots of useful accessories and customizing to suit my purposes. I'm proud of what I've done, so I've been cleaning it up and entering it in shows, simply because I wanted to show it off, and it's fun to talk to other owners. I told quite a few people at the Dieselfest, "I don't care if I win or not, I just like to show it off. " I was rather surprised that I won "Best '94+ 4X4", because I really didn't think the truck was 100% ready for the show.
I just thought you should know this.
Andy

I'm getting worried about a NW BOMBer... Evan! Usually, talk to him several times a week, and haven't heard from him since he left for dieselfest. I did read a few eye witness reports that he attended the function. I also notice a lack of postings from one of the head BOMBers... Scott1.

You guys still alive out there? No more stops in Vegas/Reno for you! Scott1, remember, this is an impressionable guy. Go easy on him.

Andy, I for one am very happy for your show win at Dieselfest! If memory serves, that makes it two years running at this event and catagory. Also a very impressive accomplishment! Jason Burton (of NW Custom) has told me of the extreme amount of toilment you devote to your Ram in order to get ready for one of these events/shows. "Going the extra mile" is what wins these events. Although it's a shame all entrants who labored so hard on their pride and joy couldn't win, let it be said, the best Ram (and owner) won.

Howdy fellas!!!

First of all, I wanna say thanks to Andy for the great summary of the show!!! #ad

***I took lot of pics, and they will be developed this week... I'll scan them and send them to the "Webmaster a. k. a. Rob Spading. "***

Well, as to the reason why I haven't been on the Board...

Long Beach was merely the beginning of my trip. From there I headed East with Scott to Las Vagas (Lost Wages) to check out Dman's shop. VERY impressive. He'll be getting my business soon. From Vagas I headed Northeast up to Green Bay, Wisconsin to check out the Packers' Lambeau Field. Totally awesome. From there I headed West to Minneapolis to meet up with Paul Kreuth, another Rammer. Couldn't find him though... From there, I headed home. A full trip report is in the works...

Now, back to Dieselfest!!!

There were tons of great trucks there. Plus it was great to meet so many of you from to Board. Too many names to list, you know who you are. The vendor area was pretty cool too, but if Dman had been there it would have been better!!! #ad

Ben, I'll do the best I can to make it to the "Sandia Showdown. " I know I probably met you at Dieselfest, but I got all the names and faces screwed up in my head right now. Were you the guy who was checkin out (drooling over) my dual exhaust?

Another cool part of the show was when a DC mechanic rolled out his tweaked out car. I am not sure of the model, but it had a HUGE blower on it, and thewhole car surged with each power stroke (oops!) of the engine. He was laying strips of rubber almost as big as HVAC's in the parking lot! #ad
VERY cool stuff!!!

Hey Rob Hanson and MikeR...

NO I did not get married!!! Very funny though!!! *LOL* #ad
You guys better make it next year!!!

The motel I stayed at was nice, other than the repeated earthquakes every morning. I wonder what that was... Or should I say who...

Well, that's about it for now... I'll be posting more details on my little 5,500 mile "journey" soon!!!

***Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that the Long Beach car wash SUCKS!!! Right, Scott? #ad
