All,
My Y2K 2500 has the wimpiest sounding horn . . . not even sure I can hear it myself over the engine. Anybody have any experience with something with a bit more oomph?

I'm looking too. I understand that there is a 2nd horn (low pitch) that Dodge deleted off of later trucks (not sure of the year but my 98 doesn't have it). I believe the wiring harness is there and you just have to plug it in. I'm thinking more along the lines of an air horn though.

Does anyone know where I can get a new 6 volt horn? My '50 Chev horn that I used for a long time on a fishing boat and on my van before putting it on my truck finally gave it up. Rust and vibration did it in. This old horn really was LOUD!

JC Whitney has the 6 volt horns , also the air horns and loud 12 volts too. . The VW 6 volts is weird on a diesel truck w/12 volts... #ad

Go the air horn route and use an air suspension pump for any of the GM products. These are available from wrecking yards and cost around $25. 00. The air horns I used was from Grover Products Company, (213) 263-9981. You will need some type of air reservoir, here again I went the lower cost route and used empty fire extinguishers. Plumed them together and added a pressure limit switch. Horns were part number 1601, 15 1/4" and 13 1/4" in length and mounted under the hood. They are "bomber loud" and have been great fun to use on people who haven't learned how to drive.

You might want to check with Rickson truck accessories, as they sell Grover Horns and their prices are pretty good, I think.

You might consider a Hadley air horn system. They come complete. Best price is JC Whitney for the dual setup.

I've used Hadleys on 3 of my pickups over the years. The kit is complete w/compressor, tank, tubing etc. but they're around $200 from JCW. I'm waiting to get the guts to pull down the headliner on my 98. 5 and install them. .

Yes, Rickson do sell air horns, among other things. I was just out there getting my new tires and wheels installed, along with initial adjustment of the pulse ratio adapter (details in another thread).

While there, they demonstrated a set of standard air horns. My only response is that, when I have $200 or so to blow, I'm installing a set of air horns on my little 2500. What I'd really like is for my sistesr to acquire a set of horns from a locomotive (she drives trains) for me. *Then* I'd be a happy camper! (After, of course, figuring out where to mount the podgy things... . )

I have some Hadley air horns from JC Whitney on my '95. That truck won't be sold until those horns are on the new 2000 Quad Cab.

Remarks:
1) They are suitably LOUD. The big rigs and the $400,000 motorhomes have louder ones, but the Hadleys will definitely wake up sleepy drivers, even in trucks.
2) You don't have to mount them on the roof. Mine are mounted behind the left side of the front bumper, near the stock horns, which were retained. I suspect that the main reason horns are on the roof of big rigs is because they used to be (still are?) controlled by a manual valve. The driver would open the air valve to the horn by pulling on a cord that dangled from the ceiling.
3) The Hadley's plumbing includes a solenoid air valve that is controlled by the wiring to the stock horn.
4) The compressor and air tank can also be mounted in any convenient spot. The compressor needs a wire that is powered when the ignition is on. The air tank shouldn't be too far from the horns. Mine is about six feet of tubing and works fine.
5) The air tank includes a Schraeder valve which, when used with a hose and a tire chuck, provides a source of air. You aren't going to air those tires in a hurry, but it's very convenient for the air bag suspension or other small jobs. I intend to add at least one more tank for additional air storage when I switch the system to the new truck. Try to mount the air tank someplace other than under the hood. That location has a wide variation in temperatures and that changes the air pressure in the tank. Without going into the long explanation, if you have used the horn while driving, the compressor will run when you switch the ignition on again after the engine has cooled. This is not desireable when you also are trying to power the intake air heater.
6) I'm really pleased with the Hadleys. I didn't even have to blow (pun intended) $200 on mine. They were a Christmas present a few years ago.

I went with the Hadley Bully horns. They are supposed to be the same loudness as the Hadley Ambassador but are much shorter. I didn't want mine to show from the outside so size was an issue. I mounted them under the radiator on the front frame crossmember and put the pump and tank on the frame under the fron door. It worked out really well and the sound is awsome. The one thing I did different than the instructions called for was I istalled a switch to select standard horns or air horns only. The kit come with a switch to be standard horns or both. Both sets of horns are rated at 133 db I believe (plenty loud).

All,
I ended up getting dual air horns from the AutoSport catalog - $69. Mounted mine under the existing horn location behind the front bumper. Works well and sounds great. Question, why would you want to keep both sets of horns with a two-way switch?

Put in a 'delay' switch. Normal toots use the regular horn, but if a prolonged blast is required, it automatically adds the air horn after a second or so. Only reason I can think of to keep both. Unless, of course, you install a manual valve and cable, and keep them separate.

I dunno about the delay business. Everytime I've needed a loud horn it was RIGHT now!! Like going thru Seattle towing my trailer with a big rig on my left and someone charged onto the freeway in a HUA condition. Almost made a big mess (inside the truck as well as outside) before said dim wit noticed what was happening.
