New stuff for 06 model

my local dealer has two very similar 2500 manual quad cabs. The only differences are

- one has the security system, the other one doesn't

- one has the NV5600, the other has the G56

what would you do? go with the proven NV5600, or the new slick shifting, slightly higher revving G56?

they are offering me either truck for the same price...

thanks for the help.

I don't like the notchy shifting of the NV5600. How does the G56 shift? I'm not scared of it yet, make your own call there. One thing that is a much have as far as I'm concerned is the trailer tow mirrors.

If you're not going to go crazy with bombs, but may go with bigger tires, then go with the G56.

I'd prefer to have the slicker shifting and the lower final drive, especially with my 35's.

If you plan on mega power, then pick the NV5600.

I think either truck will be great, each with its own set of issues.

The EVS-II security system can be added for less than $300, so make your decision based upon the transmissions.

I'm an automatic guy, but if I were to buy a manual I'd want the tried and true NV5600 over the unproven and more complex G56. If the G56 ends up having problems the NV equiped trucks will command even stronger resale values.

I don't think I'll be bombing anything crazy (no twins, maybe a box when the warranty expires), and I won't be putting huge tires either. I mostly need the truck to tow the race car (right nnow 4000# on open trailer, but i may want an enclosed trailer later), and get to work everyday.

Go with the 56 Honey

SR

Thats a no brainer go with the tried and true 56 Honey. All this talk about notchy shifting with the the 5600, mine isn't hard to shift at all!!!!!!. I remember back in 99 when they first came out they were a little notchy the 05 56 Honey is a dream.

Either some of these other members need to hit the gym or mine is the only one like it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

Mac

that's where I was leaning as well... I have driven the NV5600 for a fair bit (about 30 miles total, the sales guy was kinda ****** :) ) and the only problem I had was that I thought that 6th gear was a bit notchy to get into. That and 1st was useless. Much better to start in 2nd.

My oooold '87 Ford with the venerable 6. 9L Navistar/International only 4 of them gears, all of them useful!

I guess I'll take a test drive in the G56 to see how I like it.

The NV5600 will loosen up within a few hundred miles, one thing to keep in mind the NV5600 is heavy duty just like the ole Cummins and they both need some miles to run the way they were designed to. What I'm trying to say is the test drive is not a good indicator as to how the NV5600 will behave once it gets warm and gets some mile on it.

I have 5,500 miles on my 05 and the trans and the Cummins are doing great!

I agree with macdaddy and RankRam. Love the 5600, but I have also never touched the G56, so my . 02 might not mean much. 1st is mainly for real incline starts and weighted take offs. Love it though. We tow a 9500lb gooseneck for a living and it just keeps on going. My next truck may have to have the G56, but I am hunting like crazy for a NV so that I can rest a little better until things are proven. Now if this was just my run-about, then it would not be a big deal to me.

How can you argue with 400 lb of nodular iron? I'm sure that G56 is a fine transmission, but I love big, heavy masses of iron and steel!!!!!

Oooo, I can feel my chest hair growing just thinkin' about that. Ya'll excuse me while I go hug my big iron monster.

This reminds me of the time the wife and I were putting through a parking lot with the windows down, my wife turned to me and said what is that noise? I grinned and said thats just that big ole transmission turning. :-laf

Go with the proven NON DUAL MASS flywheel NV5600 truck. The other may be fine but I'd wait to let others tell if it is or isn't.

1st gear is lower in the g56, so you'll be using it even less than in the 5600... solid flywheel...

mine shifts just fine as long as you shift it right...

I tried the auto and manual and went with the auto to tow my trailer and jeep. the auto is just less work and let's me use my other hand for something other then the stickshift when driving in traffic. I said that I tried both the trans and they both pull fine off the stop I just like the auto. If I want to drive a stick I have my TJ. That was the NV56 not the new Grag. :D

my 5600 shifted rough for the first 1500 miles, but after that, it was no sweat. My NV5600 shifts like an HD truck transmission, but its not any harder than the 5 spd in my dads 04 dakota. . Some of you guys need to hit the gym if its that hard for you... Im only 5'7" tall and 130 lbs soaking wet, and I have no problems getting my truck to move LOL...
