I was wondering how many of you - especially with the latest ETH/DEE's are having a little gear clash when it's cold. Mine likes to clash in 3rd even 4th a little, but only when it's cold. If I really baby it (low rpm), I can keep it from happening. When it warms up, it ain't nooo problem though. Do I need to concern myself with this or not? It's been a LONG time since I drove a manual, so a little could very well be operator error. Any input I'd appreciate!
I LOVE my six-pack!! #ad

Mine has just started doing that the other morning. It only does it in 4th. I have 12000 miles on her and still love it, but yea in 4th when its cold.

UKRugbyman77,

Mine's 3 weeks old and I have about the same clash as you. Mine is a little grind that I don't hear, but feel. It only happens for a few minutes when I first start out in the morning--sometimes not at all. Temp here in the morning is about 45 degrees F.

UKR, mine did that when it was cold for the first 10 to 15 miles. I had the dealer replace the transmission with 500 miles on the truck. New transmission is perfect in every way. Its not suppose to grind at all so if you or anyone has the problem I recommend that you see your dealer to get it resolved... Pete

We got 3 new 2001 6sps this winter. Two out of three grind when cold. Will give it a summers worth a miles. If it grinds this comming winter... . time for a change.

Mine clashes going into 3rd and 4th most of the time. Not as much when pulling the TT only empty. Had it to the dealer once. Heard the "Cant duplicate condition" story and told them to shove it. Hasnt been bad for the past couple weeks since the weather started to warmup. Guess I will wait for a cure from DC or the transmission blows completely.

My 2001. 5 with a whopping 530 miles on it has this same phenomenon. When she is cold, 3rd will 'grind' quite audibly every time. I know its not operator error, cuz after 15 minutes or so of running, it won't do it anymore. 4th has happened a couple times, but not as regular as 3rd.

I have the same experience as rugby, if i 'short shift' at about 1400RPM from 2nd to 3rd, or double clutch it, i can generally eliminate the problem. Temp is in the 50s.

I read some posts from the archive about it, where the problem was reported to go away after 6000 miles or so, so i was just hanging tight to see if it got better. I need to go look up that post again and find out if his reported 6000 miles happened during the change from spring to summer, temperature being the primary causitive factor.

Mine is one month old with 1200 miles on it.
Grinds slightly into third cold.
Does NOT grind cold if I get the clutch ALL the way to the floor.
After it warms up, about 10 minutes of driving, it shifts fine.
Previous posts say the syncros will wear in after about 6000 mi.

Hafta wait and see... .

Mine grinds quite loud when it has sat overnight, upshift into 4th gear only. 3000 miles onthe transmission. It stopped for a short period, warmed up for a few days.

Third clash. It helps if I let the RPMs fall back and give it the "deep" clutch. At 27000 the stick has just loosened up to the point where it will center on 3/4 and I can feel the 1/2 and 5/6 alleys.

Mine clashes in 3rd if I don't push the clutch pedal all the way to the floor. No difference hot or cold except the shifts happen slower cold.

Mine has clashed upshifting into 3rd since I brought it home, at least when it was cold. Now it will grind going into 4th, too. If I double clutch it won't do it.
At first I thought it was me. Since then I've found that if I'm cruising along in 4th and push the clutch to the floor, it will ocassionally grind if I slip it in and out of 4th, so _know_ it's not me.
I figured that I've put up with it just about long enough (1900 miles) so that its not going to get much better. Guess I get to go convince the service writer that its time to do something about it.

Any suggestions on how to get them to replace the trans and not spend all sorts of time trying to "fix" it?

- Jason

Mine has always worked fine, cold or warmed up. No grinding or clashing except for once in a while when my brain, arm and leg temporarily get out of sync.

Under the advisory of the dealer, I'm going to have it checked out monday. That way, if they say it's no big deal, and it craps out on me in a year or so, I'll have some paperwork. I hope this is not the beginning of a tainted truck #ad
, everything else is fine right now.

Does anybody know how long I will be w/o my pickup if they have to replace the transmission #ad
?

Thanks!

Sue's 01 has a reliable 3rd gear clash (grind) while shifting within the first 3 miles when the weather is cold. After a few miles and/or when the temp is above 40F, there is no problem. Double clutching the first couple of 3rd gear shifts prevents the problem. FWIW: The truck has 10,000 miles on it and it is not becuase we fail to fully depress the clutch - I mash the clutch hard to the floor and still get the clash. Oddly enough, the people in the service dept can't duplicate the problem but they say they believe me and note on the ticket that "no TSB has been issued yet".

Earlier in the month mopars1 posted that Chrysler is aware of the problem. https://www.turbodieselregister.com/ubb//Forum4/HTML/004676.html

Jayman,
1900 miles is not very much, I would recomend to wait and see if at around 6000 or 9000 miles weather it clears up. I have 9800 on mine and the 3rd clash when cold is getting less and less. Just like the motor needs 10-15k to break in, the transmission needs some too. be patient.

Mine had gear clash when downshifting from 6th to 5th after it warmed up. Took it to the dealer and they drove it, agreed with me. They called something called "star" and were told to change to fluid and tell me it was normal when cold. Yes, I have that in writing. I got in the habit of goosing the throttle between gears when downshifting. Just got back from pulling the 5'er to Florida. Odometer now reads 3400 miles. Either I got used to it or it fixed it's self. Seems to be fine now. I still have 34 months left on my warranty and I'm not worried. Love the way the truck pulls in 5th gear.
