Mine has never "clashed" even once in 20,000 miles. I almost have forgotten what clash is, and then hop in the '46 Willy's and am quickly reminded. It is true that I am in sunny California so the truck has never seen anything under 30-degrees.

Mine is the same as most of you posted, slight grind into 3rd when cold. Just at dealer this week and they can't see any problem, but did agree on the oil leak on front seal. Ordered seal. Now have 20500 miles , so much for it going away after some miles.

Eric/Dave - Thanks for the update on how your 6 speeds are doing after a few more miles on them. I'll try to give it a little longer and not get into a full DEFCON 1 panic about the situation. #ad

I guess the only thing that concerns me is that if it should never improve, and I'm in a position of trying to convince the dealer that it needed a new one from day one and they aren't willing to do something about it.

I did tell the "5 star coordinator" about it when they called to check on my "buying experience". I also told the service manager (who seemed to hear what I was saying) about it and that I was willing to give it time to break in first.

Has anyone noticed that some times it seems that it's not so much the fault of the syncros, but that it almost seems that the shifter hanging up and catching 2 rails at the same time. Sometimes mine just does not want to go into gear. Like when you try to go for the wrong gear (say going for 5th and getting 3rd) and the syncronizers are working so hard to get control of the gear cluster speeds that there is additional resistance, and the trans is telling you that you don't really want to go there. But when mine does it, often you try for another gate and those are unhappy too. So there you are coasting thru the middle of the intersection trying for every gear on the pattern hoping to find the right one.

I was also thinking that perhaps the clutch could be failing to fully disengage, and that's why double clutching seems to cure most of the clash, almost as if there was fluid bypassing the seals in one of the cylinders (much like when you pump the brakes while bleeding them before you get a pedal back). In my experience, usually you get grinding reverse with that condition, but since I'm told our reverse gears are syncronized, it wouldn't show it.

Well just my $. 02 worth... once again comments are appreciated.

Take Care - Jason

Jayman,

Both Sue and I have been lost in the gates and experienced the "I can't find ANY $*@#! gear" syndrome. The solution I discovered is to "use the force, Luke". When you can't find a gear, release the shifter knob (take your hand off!), put your hand back on - 3rd is straight up, 4th is straight back. When I showed Sue this trick, she laughed, then she tried it. Now she still laughs about "using the force", but it always works for her too! #ad

Add me to the list; mild clash upshifting to 3rd, nothing worth talking about in other gears, since I don't expect a truck to shift quite like a car.
At 35,500+ miles, mine is at dealer as I write this. This is my first experience with this dealer after the sale, so he has the chance to impress me, or not. If "not" is the answer, thanks to this board I know where I can buy my next truck for under invoice. His call. #ad

Mine has/had the 3rd clash in cold weather, have 11,000 miles and it was still doing it alltho it did get better with miles. I eat up miles and mine will be out of warrenty before next winter so after some research I found that DC is very aware of this and if your dealer calls the STARLINE (I think it is called they will be told to add 2 containers of antispin additive to trans and then give it 2 weeks to work in. I did that a few weeks ago and knock on wood it is gone. The weather has been cold and no problems. I also noticed that sometimes I wasn't pushing the clutch in allllll the way. Hope this helps.

They don't even put that much in the anti spin rearends!

Walter Crovo- can you keep us posted on how your truck runs with this stuff in the transmission?

My '00 4wd has minor 3rd gear clash since day 1 - I now have 27k miles and it has gotten better or worse. It is temperature related. I keep meaning to take it to the dealer - one of these days before 36k.

I've even tried taking out the driver side floor mat to make sure I was fully depressing the clutch - no difference.

I get one from 4th to 5th.

Only when it's cold outside, and only the first time for the day. It doesn't matter how long I tool around in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. (I think. )

Talk about not reproducable!

I have about 2500 miles on Big Red. When it is below 40 degrees outside I get a slight grind going to sixth for the first few miles and if it is below 30 I get a slight grind going into fifth. That mineral based Texaco oil is pretty thick when its that cold outside. When the oil warms up and thins out alittle, the grinding seems to go away on most trucks. Adding the friction modifier should help the problem because it is effectivly thinning out the oil and making it slicker. I am contemplating changing mine to Mobil 1 75 90 weight syn which should also stop the problem. I just don't know how that would work in the middle of summer when its 95 degrees outside. I may get some grinding then because the oil is too thin. There is only one way to find out. The thickness of the oil is determining how fast or slow the syncros are lining up between shifts.

Wayne,
I'd never claim to be an expert on the NV5600, but I do know from experiences of friends that if you put gear lube in a transmission designed to work with modified motor oils (like the Texaco lube, if I understand correctly), then that transmission is not long for this life. If you were going to "risk" something other than the Texaco Lube, I'd consider the Amsoil 5W-30, which is a lot closer to the factory spec, and as a synthetic should give the better cold weather performance you are seeking.

Walter, glad to hear it helped. Do you happen to have the part # for this additive? All I ever hear from my local dealer is "Cant duplicate condition".

My 6 speed clashes going into third quite a bit. It does not matter if cold or hot. A couple of times it did not want to downshift into second. I change the oil, draining it into a new, clean pan. The oil was FULL of metal. I added an Eaton filter along with new oil. This seemed to help a little. At this time the trans is out and apart on the bench. the STAR center sent me a new complete counter shaft. They said there were burs found on the shaft. I am also replacing all the stop rings and fiber bearings that reside inside the stop rings. It will be a few days to see if this helps. If there are still problems I will try the anti-spin carrier additive. I will try to keep you up to date.

Update, the truck is back together and I have had a chance to put about 30 miles on it. The shift is different and I can shift it like a car 4 speed and it shifts fine. I can enjoy my truck again. It is a pleasure to drive now. The complete counter shaft was replaced along with all the stop rings and stop ring bearings. I will update again in a few days. This posting is on two different threads, so hopefully you having troubles out there may have some hope.

The only hope I would have is if the transmission went completely. Thats the only thing my local dealer understands. Their other excuse is "we havent sold that many 6spds". Im putting antispin in my transmission. Only $5 for a bottle. If it eliminates even part of the chatter Id be happy. BTW,is the filler plug the one on the left side with the allen fitting?Sorry for the negativity. Vacation is still 2 1/2 weeks away and then on to MM. #ad
#ad

Yes, the filler plug is on the left side. It is a 17mm allen. I happened to have a socket that fit it from the days of working on the 1. 7L engine in the first Omni's.
