I'm having trouble filling my new to me '13 3500 flatbed with DEF. It won't even start to fill at a DEF pump at a station and when I fill from the jug box it acts like the vent isn't working right. I checked the hose to the tank and it's good. Is there some kind of one way vent valve in the tank?

So i'm guessing the DEF is backfilling out of the filler hole?

Filling DEF tank push nozzle all the way in, then fill slow or will splash back out, and side of truck will have DEF crystal all over.

It's impossible to even start a flow of DEF. The only way I've been able to get DEF into the tank is to use a gas can filled at the DEF pump, Then using a series of plastic plumbing I'm able to fill the DEF tank 2 1/2 gal. at a time. Also the wife catches the spillage into a plastic cup. Unless someone has a fix I'll continue with this method.

Just a guess but when they put your flat bed on they have something out of place or kinked. You should be able to take one of the 2 1/2 gallon containers of DEF that is commercially available and poor it in without any additional parts needed. The hose may simply be routed uphill some. Call J&I and visit with them.

I've inspected the plumbing install and it's all downhill though very gradual at best. I got 5 gal in today using my gravity lash up. I don't know what to do short of dropping the tank and replace the elbow connection at the tank.

I have put some flat beds on where the fuel line is all down hill but it won't take fuel very fast and it is always caused by a change in the angle of the fuel lines. Go look at a truck that has the factory bed on it and look at the angle of the lines in comparison to yours.

I filled the DEF tank at a Flying J truck stop DEF pump on my 2016 a few days ago on our trip from Texas to Ohio. It wouldn't take DEF very fast, but I was able to complete the fill.

Thanks for the responses guys. I'll go to a dealer and check out the hose routing this weekend. I assume that device shown goes into a DEF tank fill with a larger neck than what's on my truck. The nozzle just fits into my filler opening as it is.

I have never had a lot of success using the magnet but it slides of the nozzle and then you can put the end of the nozzle in you fill spout. It doesn't allow you to put it as far in but it is far enough to allow you to fill at a rapid speed. I know others on here will bash me but I run my truck till the DEF low light comes on and then I add two 2.5 gallon jugs that I buy from Sams, Walmart or Amazon. The jugs come with a hose with an air vent and I can turn those jugs upside and fill the truck as fast as physics allows. I never overfill and have a mess if I wait till light comes on. Remember the light is the first warning the second warning is when it starts counting down from 250 miles till it limits your speed. I find it hard to believe in my travels that I would ever be within 250 miles of where I could find DEF. Many claim that the way I do it is a recipe for failure cause I never know of the quality of my DEF it could be bad and putting it in my truck with so little in the tank could cause system failure. I say that is hog wash If the chance for that happen was is great as others would have you believe then we would be seeing infomercials with lawyers for class action suits against DEF manufactures. Now if I bought DEF and carried it around in the back of the truck for several months in the summer, yes I can see me having problems. If you are concerned about how fresh your DEF your buying is look at the date on the box.
