Yeah, let your DEF run out at least once per year to ensure you are not mixing old def with new.

As for filling at a truck stop..... I was trying to put some DEF in at Loves Truck stop last summer.

But the pump would auto-turn off after just putting a swig in. I wore out my forearms squeaziing the trigger repeatedly.

Turns out the newer Semi' s & medium duty trucks have a magnet in the filler

if it doesn't have va magnet, it shuts off

Well that sucks... I want to fill mine DEF tank at a truck stop so I can more accurately measure my consumption.

From my previous experiences (about 14 to 16 bulk purchases of DEF at the pump) very few of the truck stops bulk DEF pumps require the magnet. The ones that do will have a loaner available inside whenever you prepay your pump. As a rule, the dispensing order is : 1) Pump #2 fuel; 2) Pump DEF. It helps to know what your estimated total purchases are (#2 + DEF) whenever you go inside to prepay with a credit or debit card.

That's great news! :)

How big a magnet is used and where does it need to be placed?

When I was getting a weight check/ticket for my pickup a few months ago at a local truck stop I heard a truck driver being told he needed to fuel with diesel first, then DEF.

Flying J doesn't use the magnet, at least where I have filled up with DEF. I had to let the gauge go all the way empty and then drive some more before I got the warning on my Big Horn 7" cluster. A photo is in my column, Issue 85.

I had the same experience as Joe, gauge down into the red and then I got the light along with a message on the EVIC for me to add DEF. Checked in the owners manual for the to verify that the indicator was for the DEF level.

Does the fancier, higher trimmed trucks still display the same message as my lowly Tradesman???

My "countdown" starts at 200 miles, but another guy on forum "X" said his starts at 500 miles.......and I detect something fishy, especially since he had no truck pics or signature.
