Def-loc use at own risk

Posting this as a fyi to fellow ram owners,

I purchased a locking def cap and locking fuel cap last year as a feel good preventive type thing for around $100.
Well a month ago while removing the def lock cap I heard a popping sound followed by the sound of something sliding into my virtually empty def tank. Fortunately I was able to remove the cap and examine it instantly I realized what had occurred. The def loc cap assembly is held together with a tiny e-clip which came off and now resides in the bottom of my def tank.

I contacted the manufacturer of this item and sent it to them for examination upon receipt of the lock I was more or less blown off and told to contact the supplier.

I have contacted the supplier and requested a refund still waiting to see if that comes through.

So buyer beware is all I can say I am out $100+ and have a manufacturer who could care less what if any effect this product will have in the future on my very expensive def system.

I’m all about supporting the “mom and pop” business in this country but in this case I got burnt.

That sucks. I just bought one too. Perhaps a touch of rtv silicon on that c-clip would be a good preventative measure?

That's a bummer. That design looks pretty cool, but complicated also. I believe that this is a case of re-ineventing the wheel gone wrong.

I have a tough time trying to imagine someone wanting to siphon a gallon of urine out of that tiny tank.

Ok... The Cap looks Cool. But an Aluminum cap being used to cap the Corrosive DEF fluid? I see problems here down the road. Knowing how things turn to crud in just the salt water marine environment DEF is just as nasty. Just sayin.

That certainly is a sad concept to think that something like that would happen.

It also makes you slow down and think about what you are doing so you don't put the wrong stuff in the wrong hole. I have the locking fuel cap, not the DEF. I was wondering too how it would hold up to the DEF fluid over time.

I don't want to over simplify the concern but it probably took longer to post the photo and description than it would have to stop by Ace Hardware and pick up a new e-clip.
As far as the clip, spending the rest of its life at the bottom of the tank isn't going to make any difference in the operation.

I would second Sag's statememnt. I got mine at Genos, and am sure with their customer service would send me out a new one if thsi happened.

I too got both the locking fuel and DEF cap at Geno’s and had the fear that if either failed would result in exactly as described above. Sold it and got the simple push/pull model for fuel and twist off/on for DEF. I fought anyone including Geno’s would pay to have debris removed from your Def tank due to a malfunction so just could not see taking the risk with the locking cap.

I dont post on forums much so you would be correct it would have been quicker to goto the hardware store lol.
This happened over a month ago and I waited to see how it all turned out so far not well.....

The def-loc is no longer in my possession the manufacture wanted it back to examine it.

I’ve been a customer of geno’s garage for a couple years and always heard how wonderful the customer service was I havent heard a word from them in near 2 weeks. I was assured a refund was possible I’m patiently waiting.

Please clarify your statement about the clip spending its life in the bottom of the tank if true that would certainly put my mind at ease. I have spent several hours trying to determine if the the ram def pump has a screen on it ford and chevy dont. The def pump retails for $2200. It could be I’m concerned about nothing.

I am driving the truck and have for over a month what else can I do other than pull the tank and fish the clip out?

As mentioned in my initial post this is simply a FYI to other ram owners beware using this item if I knew what I know now I would never have purchased or used this product. The fuel cap lock made by the same group should be ok due to the dual flapper system on the ram the first should catch the clip if it falls off.

The manufacturer would of had to agree to a buy back before I would of sent the defective cap back to them. They tell you they won't make it right and then they want you to send it back to them so they can improve the product ??? No way.

The E clip is not going to hurt anything. I suppose you could pull the DEF tank if your concerned but if it were mine I would not give it another thought.

Id consider grabbibg a slim extending magnet, and slider down the tube, and see if u get the clip, not sure ud grab something else such as the top of tge pump or somthing but worth a cheaper try

That tube is several feet long with turns...

Isnt there a screen down low on the fill pipe before anything can fall in the tank?

Probably won't cause a problem, but I wouldn't like it either.
