Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Delayed 4X4 Disengage Normal?

With all the snow in Ohio the past week, I've been in and out of 4X4 a lot. I've owned the truck since new, but honestly can't remember if this is normal.



When shifting out of 4Hi to 2 Hi while moving down the road, the indicator light goes out right away, but I can feel (and hear) a "clunk" as the front axle disengages. I may drive a half-mile before it happens. Is this normal or do I have a problem brewing?

I've had to let off the accelerator briefly to have mine disengage.

My light goes out and i don't hear or feel anything.
You may want to check the vacuum lines to the cad, one of mine popped out last winter, and it would take a longer time for the light to go out.

Ocassionally mine will wait a few seconds to go out, but not a half mile. I'm talking maybe 10 seconds at most and not all the time. Usually it's pretty immediate.

If stopped you could always back up a few inches to see if goes off right away. This may point to worn parts in the cad.

yep, if i'm not mistaken the owners manual for my truck actually says this too.
