Help me here I got a great deal on a new 04 Larime 4X4 with everything on it for $5,000 under invoice. Or I could buy a new 05... not as good a deal for $1,000 under invoice... are the differences in the 04 and 05 that great???

Probably a wash. The 4000 difference is about what the one model yr will worth down the road. The edge is to the Laramie since it's better equipped (If you like leather) but the '05 should have more bugs worked out like the lift pump in the tank( an as yet unproven plus but likely is).

Go for the truck you like better. Color, options, Etc.

bob r...

if the 04 (4. 5?) is a manuel then it has the tried and true nv5600. it also has the full metal intercooler. i would get the 04, what's better than a used truck with no miles, besides a new truck with no miles, but you know what i mean.

With the cold-start problems some have had due to leaking injectors, the totally bad injectors others have had, and the drone some others have had, I would opt for the 05.

Haven't heard much negative at all concerning the 2005. Plus it probably has the new thrust washer, which will allow for an apporved exhaust brake (when Chrysler finally finishing it current testing).

I would order it, however, and not take one off the lot.

Your signature says you already have a 2003 so IMHO you should just keep it.

If the 2004 is a 305/555 then this should be your first choice if you insist. It was the last year of the good MPG Cummins, and no smog junk.

No way would I recommend a 2004. 5 (325/600) or a 2005 (325/610). This is when owners started complaining about low MPG, operating issues, and also the first year for tons of smog related add-ons and tuning.

I agree with RTuvell - get the 2004 if it's a 305/555. If not, might as well get the 05 because it's the second year of the '600' engine and should be slightly updated - as well as having an updated 48RE and programming if you go the auto route. The 05's all have the revised thrust washer and may soon (who knows) be approved for exhaust brakes.

I would get the 04 if its the really a 4. 5 and get the 600 seriess, better options less price, and sure it might get less mpg but it's a fair trade for more power stock. I've put 16000 on mine in half a year and love it to death. otherwise get the 05. BTW I had to cold start prob. this winter in Colo. The dealer didn't even included a plug. They don't put them on any other theirs because they don't think it's needed. I did however buy one and put it on anyway.

If it was built 2/20/04, it's an 04. 5. Anything built after 1/1/04 is an 04. 5. Mine was built 2/21/04 and it's a 600.

I would think the only advantage of the 04. 5 over the 05 is the intercooler.

Aside from my belt-shredding incident, my 04. 5 has been, as they say in the commercial, sswwweeeeeeeett.

I like having the lift pump accessible. I replaced mine with the Diesel Dynamics kit. If the in-tank pump is restrictive for hp upgrades, it would be harder to deal with. Sounds like you got a good deal on the 04. 5, but test drive it first to be sure it is all OK. I prefer the 6 speed over the automatic.

FWIW - I have sold many a truck to TDR members for $1000 under invoice, And then take off the rebates of $2000

So really $3000 under - I made it even harder now didn't I? :-laf

It's interesting to hear members recommending the 04. 5's as the model to buy now. I guess last year's model is always the best. :)

Actualy the 04. 5 is $40,000 on invoice... I am getting this baby for $34,000 that's $6,000 under invoice. Can anyone beat that?

Wait, what happened to the $33,000 quote from your earlier post?

If it invoices at $40k, that means you could have bought it last year for 3% under that, or $38,800. Deduct an additional 15% for the year of depreciation sitting on their lot and you're at $32,988 (right where their quote is at). I'd offer them $32k and then possibly meet them in the middle at $32,500. Sounds like a good deal to me. :)
