Competition How will the project X cam do for towing?

I know that the topic of delivery valves has been discussed many times on this forum, but my area of interest lies in the delivery valve holder. Is there anyone who may point me in a direction or vendor who has experience in these upgrades. I recently exchanged the holders in my 94 with 181's, but I retained the 131 delivery valve because it had less shoulder material. I have heard of machining the bore of the holder, and also running a larger say "0. 093 holder, any information on this topic would be greatly appreciated.

What part of the delivery valve was EDMed? I have heard of enlarging the bore of the holder, but this would lead me to believe that the delivery valve would not seat properly in the holder. I am wondering if there are larger diameter holders available, I remember reading an article mentioning "0. 093 holders.

The stock holders have a . 025 hole in them, the stock lines are . 072, most people EDM the holders out to . 093 and run . 093 lines, some maybe stock lines. I've run both and didn't gain anything for power that I could tell, all it did was make the pump grouchy.

The main thing with them it will relieve the pumps pressure in a 13mm aplication, it puts less internal pressure on the pump that wipes out the pump camshaft... ... . ask me how I know this!

You don't need to pay to edm the holders internal "button" to full size. Bosch offers holders that aren't restricted for other P pump applications. I did not find any power from full size holes, but you may get some benefit from trying the various restrictor sizes Bosch offers such as . 025, . 028 etc. It will take a good dyno to see anything.

Well after driving my '94 for 3 days with 181 holders and 131 delivery valves I am able to say there is a very noticeable difference. It is much stronger down low, pre-boost smoke is up but it cleans out rather quickly. I may experiment with different holders in the near future, but right now I have too many projects to take care of. Thanks for all of the information.

After some rereading of this post I have found a miscommunication in the description of delivery valve holder. What I was leaning towards is the base(holder) for the delivery valve itself, the holder portion of the two part delivery valve assembly. I installed the 181 base(holder) with my 131 delivery valves and noticed a good amount of throttle response difference. My question is has anyone have any experience in running different, larger diameter delivery valve bases(holders)? Something like this, https://www.turbodieselregister.com/user_gallery/displayimage.php?&photoid=1101&width=0

I was under the impression that there was not any differences between the delivery valve "bases" from one size to the next?

I have been doing some experimenting myself with DV's. What I have found is: base(holder your talking about) is almost the same with 131's & 191's, the 181's have a different base--it is the same overall diameter but instead of the "lip" at the bottom it is that dia. from one end to the other, with the exception of a small undercut(sort-of) on the bottom side. They all have the same I. D.

I purchased a set of Columbus diesel's DV's just to see what the fuss was about, well they were originally 181's that were cylindrical ground on just the DV itself to take "out" the larger area near the top of it. I cut myself a set on a metal lathe with a diamond insert---what I came up with was a part with a better finish, and boy could I well a difference between mine and thiers! Thier "holder" was the same dia. as mine with NO modifications. I am not cutting down on thier work here just stating that there is NO voodoo involved in DV's, if their was they wouldnt need your "cores", they would just make new ones. :D

Oh and by the way: the DV's are super hardened tool steel, they checked 62 rockwell C.

The 131 delivery valve holder is completely opposite of the 181 delivery valve holder. The 131 delivery valve holder is larger at the base than the top portion, and the 181 holder is smaller at the base than the top portion.

131 delivery valve holder

base - 20mm W - 3mm H

top - 18mm W - 12mm H

181 delivery valve holder

base - 18mm W - 3mm H

top - 20mm W - 12mm H

The laser cut delivery valves are stock delivery valves with the shoulder surface ground flat to achieve more fuel flow, surely not rocket science. My interest lies in the fact that the 181 delivery valve has more shoulder material than the 131 delivery valve, but makes more hp in it's application. This leads me to believe that the difference is in the holder(base). From my experience 131, 191, 022, and some laser cut delivery valves use the smaller holders(bases). The project I am working on will be similiar to running 181 delivery valve holders(bases) with a 022 delivery valve.

can some take a pic of th emodified vs stock dv's. . i messed with some old ones and a dremel but i slipped and messed one up so i never tested em. . i was cutting teh vanes so they were thinner ie more fuel fitting thru etc. . was taht correct. . a picture would be great . .

thanks

Your measurements are all measurements on the outside of the "base" correct?
