Hemi,

That's not what I wanted to hear (your truck doesn't pop):D I had just brought closure to that problem. I am running the thin washers on my 370's..... and I believe the other guys are too. I am going to play around with different washers and see what happens. I wouldn't mind trying the DD3's but money doesn't allow (got to get my money together for a bigger pump:D ) If I remember right the DD3's only produce about 4-5 hp less.

cumminsgetme & Holeshot

I don't know if 400 hp out of a small 160, 175 hp pump is possible. If we do it, I believe we'll be the first ones. Joe D's friend got about 367hp if I remember right. I think thats the record for a 'small' pump?

If we add up all our mods we have, (cumminsgetme) we should be at around 400hp. I think if we both dyno'd our trucks, we would see less than 350 at the rear wheels. :(

Look at Don M's signature. He has a lot stronger pump than ours, with similar mods. Other 215 pump trucks with the same mods as ours aren't at 400 hp either.

Please prove me wrong. :D

HEMI,

I remember that thread. I don't think that "Jed" had delivery valves or an HX-40 installed. If I remember correctly he had a 14 cm exh. housing from an old Banks kit.

I'm going to dyno in November, and believe you me, I'm going to do all I can to prove you wrong. :)

Although, if you read my other thread "dueling dodges" you'll see that I'm having trouble fending off the locals with this pump. Any more like that and I don't know if this 'little' pump is still going to be in come November.

Jeez, after everything that has happened today I was thinking... . how can things get much worse? Well, I know this pales in comparison, but I need a bigger pump now  ..... it seems as though the 400rwhp goal is suddenly getting more difficult..... "Honey, can you hand me the phonebook?... . I gotta find an authorized Bosch diesel dealer... ... " :D

Matt

We still might not get 400hp but I think we would be deathly close. I almost dyno'd before I left Vegas however I didn't due to the agressive popping and loss of power at high rpm. Now I wish that I would have. My friends 24V dyno'd at 337hp and my truck will walk off and leave it at a stand still, but who's to say whether that is a difference 30hp or 60hp.

I suppose I can live with 'deathly' close to 400rwhp on my pump..... I know that my eventual goals are going to require a lot more than just pump mods... . so I'm okay with that. :D

Matt - evil thoughts, as always.

washers

cumminsgetme,

If you have the 'true' 370's stay with the thin . 020" washers. You will lose about 20HP by changing to the thicker ones, dyno tested reality:D

cumminsgetme,

At what rpm do you get this popping noise? Have you tried going to that rpm and higher only feeding it more fuel slowly? If it goes to the higher rpm's okay, under lighter fuel loads, I would suspect that your timing is not advanced enough.

Piers,

Thank you. Cumminsgetme and I have very similar trucks and we both have this popping.

Light throttle, high rpm = no popping.

Heavy throttle, high rpm = loud popping

I guess we'll go for more timing.

Piers,

Chris just hit it on the nose. Popping begins around 2700 rpm. Under light fueling I get no popping and can achieve high rpm, however, it is a little rough (not real noticeable, but definately not as smooth as it should be). What would you reccomend we set the timing at? Timing is currently at 16 deg. I'm willing to try anything that will solve this problem. The truck is losing tons of power when popping starts.

Thanks,

-Cord

timing the 5.9

Are you guys going to the Kerrville Rally? If so I'll be doing a demo on timing there. If not advance your timing, it's hard to tell you how much, without listening to your engine. With your pumps I would start at 18 degrees & go from there. See my post under Piers-215 pump why stop there. It explains the "how come" part. My first Cummins was a 94 auto, I played with that thing for hours & finally got it up to 400 rwhp with the original pump, that was with the 275hp marine injectors, back in the days when Bosch wasn't making the fuel system for the 370 marine engine.

Cord,

Do you want to borrow my timing kit this weekend? You're welcome to it as always. If you don't, I'll be advancing mine anyways.

-Chris

Chris,

When are you planning on doing yours. I'm free friday or saturday. I'll give you a call and get directions to your place. You drove to BCS last weekend so I'll drive down there this time.

EH Matt... . only 20 plus hours???? that shoud be a one day trip for a young feller like you. The round trip Louise & I have planned out is 101 hours or 5985 miles according to Mapquest:D And I don't think they figure on a 26. 5' fiver in tow:eek: ... . so we'll see you there then??? maybe I could tempt you with a free custom ground race plate & boost fitting, I may have one or two as prizes;)

Piers;

What, you should be able to do it in less than that time based on your trip through Mount Vernon on your way to Spokane. :D :D :D unless you allowed for stops by the side of the road and filling out paper work;) ;) ;)

Tracy

ROTFLMAO Tracy:D It's a little longer than staight down to Texas and back. Heading up to Denver to visit friends, then over to the Tulare show. But you're right, that 101 hours doesn't include filling out paperwork time:eek: But then if I don't speed at all:rolleyes: I may make it there on time;)
