My dog's X-Mas present.

I bought a helicopter

I am planning on getting a new computer being that this 9 year old Gateway I have is as pathetic as a 6. 0 Powerstroke :-laf I am no computer geek but what I have researched so far, you seem to get more for your money with a Gateway than with a Dell? The Gateway I have now has been trouble free, it is just time to update. Let me know what you guys think.

Thx,

Paul

This will turn into a transmission thread, no doubt...

I have 2 Dell's here at home. At work I have a Dell notebook. I also have a Toshiba notebook for home use. Have never had a problem with any of them...

Had a Gateway notebook till someone sat on it and cracked the screen. Never had a problem with that either...

making your own is always an option, but ends up costing more:(

i would like to make a new one [in a 4U rack case or HTPC case] but the parts alone will cost near double to something that is premade by dell, gateway, acer etc. .

i'd go with what package gives you the best bang for the buck.

1gb ram, 250gb hdd [preferably with avalable space in case/mainboard for adding ram/hdd/pci cards]

amd or intel. . both work good [i've got both an amd x2 3800 and intel p4 2. 93ghz]

I ended up with a Gateway laptop. Seems to be a fairly well built machine. If I had it to do over again I'd do the same. If their desktops are built this nice, I'd not hesitate to suggest one.

Hey what are you going to do with the old one. I know a person who could use but can't afford a new one. Is it wireless capable?? I have dell laptop and an pleased with it.

I've owned several Dell laptops and now a desktop for the little woman. We also use Dell laptops at work. I'm very happy with them. I have no experience with Gateway, but a guy a work has a bunch of Gateway stock.

I've had 2 built by pcclub.com. You can start with a base package and upgrade/downgrade any part or piece you want and not buy items you don't need including a bunch of 'free' software you don't need. I have a Dell at work and there are several programs I have removed that I didn't need that conflicted with the ones I wanted to have on there. I've had both Dells and Gateways and either one will get the job done.

The newest home computer I've purchased is an HP, and it's been good. We use Dell laptops at work, and they've been quite reliable. Can't comment on Gateway since I've never owned one.

I have a dell laptop a year old and just bought a Dell desktop and we have Gateways at work but in my Neighborhood many of the people work for HP and I have to say I like the HPs too

Bang for the buck, I would buy HP. I work in the industry and I have seen and worked with all types. I also have a buddy who's job it is at Microsoft to test PC's and Servers with Windows. He says Dell's aren't so good and also recommends HP. Of course that's just two opinions and your mileage may vary.

I usually build my own. Yes, one can argue that it's more expensive that way and it is. That is because I can't get by with just a $400 PC. I need higher end hardware. Now, if you compare apples to apples high end wise, you can build your own for cheaper.

Bottom line, HP.

I build PC's and I have to agree with Huskeman. I can use parts from here and there and always be cheaper than the major brands. I can use the "Really good stuff" and it is more expensive, it is also better.

If buying from Dell, Gateway or even HP for tha matter look carefully ar RAM, CPU cache, Clock Speed, RAM speed and hard drive size. Many people do not check these areas to make sure they are getting the "Same thing". No disgrace in getting less for less or more for more, just make sure you are really getting what you need.

Something to think about when buying a Dell. I have one and there card slot is an Express version and say Cingular does not have a card that will go in there so you can use the internet via wireless. Dell has one but there $270... ... . very irritating and I'm stuck.

Here at work we are mainly a dell shop both desktop and laptops but we have a few gateway laptops out there as well. Here and I only speak for here the gateways have been a letdown. They have not held up nearly as well as the Dell laptops. The same users over the last couple product cycles have used gateways and they have not lasted(or have been problematic)this time one of them went with a toshiba and it is having its share of problems as well. Product related not sure since it is the same user and he hasnt used a Dell yet and the other couple who have recently switched to Dell it has been a very short time.

I have to agree with both of these persons. My experience with Gateway has not been good. My only advice/opinion I will add to this is to make sure, whatever brand you choose, is to get a business class machine. Home/consumer class machines aren't built as robustly as business class.

This is my experience for what it is worth. First puter we got at home was a Compaq had it several yrs but problems with it off and on. Bought a Dell for the house its about 4-5 yrs old and have had no problems. We got Dell's at work now and have not had any problems. Daughter is in college and she bouth a Gateway notebook and had more problems with it not working than working. She replaced it with a Acel and so far its still working.

Just want to thank everyone for all of the info/advice. I ended up ordering a new Dell this week through the IT Mgr. at work. Szumigalas, sent you a PM.
