Just switched to Delo 400 5w-40 synthetic after 20,000 mi. Just wondering if anybody out there was using this oil and what the word is on it.

Recently pulled fan and offed the old airbox for a fleetgaurd something or other that is big and doesnt starve this beast for air. WOW!

I get the feeling this wants to get off it's leash and run like it's built to!! What's the next step?

Paul, don't you mean Mobil Delvac 1 ? I never heard of Delo 400 Synthetic  Maybe a new oil showed up on the market I haven't heard of yet??

Vaughn

Yes, the oil is Delo 400 5w-40 synthetic , I've got 9 gallons of it in the garage. The cummins is gonna love it at -10 deg. The cost is $76. 00 a case( 6 gal. jugs) less than half the cost of amsoil. yahoo!

Chevron Delo 5W-40 synthetic is a Group III base stock oil like Castrol Syntec. It is made by severely hydrocraking conventional oil in order to convert impurities into paraffins. It is not a true synthetic like Amsoil or Delvac which contain Group IV and V base stocks that are made from scratch from smaller molecules. Group III oils are turning out to be cost effective competitors for the true synthetics. Because they are not quite as "pure" as true synthetics, they have certain advantages with respect to being able to hold additives in solution. However, they tend to have poorer pour characteristics at low temperatures and are not quit as heat stable as true synthetics. But they are far superior to conventional oils in these respects.

All that aside, the Delo 5W-40 seems to hold up well in VW TDIs for 10,000 mile change intervals. These little engines are designed to run with synthetic oil and are much harder on oil than the Cummins. Check out the TDI board. Delo 5W-40 synthetic (Group III), Petro Canada Duron (Group III), Amsoil (Group IV/V, and Delvac 1 (Group IV/V) are the only North American oils that seem to hold up for the 10,000 mile change interval. For about $15 per gallon, the Delo 5W-40 should be an excellent choice for the Cummins. Anybody done an oil analysis yet?

6 gal = 24qts. 76/24 = 3. 16 per qt. + tax

Amsoil 15-40 is 3. 90 per qt. + tax + shipping

The 5w-40 is nice. Opposed to 5w-30 or 15w-40. Its synthetic and its Delo 400. Where did you get this? This will be my next oil analysis comparison.

Duron eh?

Good info there Lee-may have to mosey on over to that board and dig out some more info. I buy the majority of my fuel and lube products from Petro-Canada, except for engine oil. Still running Esso XD3 15W40 dino oil for a few more klicks until I'm good and sure I'm broken in (37000 km now but not a bunch of towing in there-mainly operating miles). I've seen the Duron stuff at my local bulk distributor but I pretty much discounted it because of the Group III classification. Maybe I shouldn't have been so harsh?

Actually I'm pretty lucky in my area for oil availability. UFA deals in Chevron, and right now Husky deals in Mobil stuff-although they say with the Exxon-Mobil merger that soon the Esso bulk dealers will have the Delvac (or whatever it'll end up being named when they consolidate their lubricant lines). So I guess now I've got a decision to make between 3 lubes instead of 2 :)

Thanks again for the info Lee

Jason,

Petro Canada recently came out with an SAE 5w-40, Group III synthetic diesel oil. The cold temp specs are better than the Chevron stuff, with a pour point of -60F. If you live in Canada, this is the stuff to look for. It is roughly $14. 00 US for 4 liters ... . They also make a 0w-30, CH-4 rated synthetic diesel oil for extreme cold weather use.

Since these group III "synthetics" are made using a type of ultra refining technique, the quality does vary from manufacturer to manufacturer

Switched to it three changes ago and love it. It is available at Costco- I seem to remember it being comething in the neighborhood of $40 per case. Engine seems to run quieter - smoother starts. Good.

Dkevdog, what brand oil are you useing (I couldn't tell which post you were refering to).

I have looked all over ND and can not find the 10-30 or 5-40 only 15-40. Wish I could get ahold of some 5-40.

Ron;

Which 5W-40 synthetic do you want? Delo or Delvac? JStordahl told me Pam Oil in Fargo handles Delvac. They may handle Delo, too.

Home of Economy in Grand Forks carries a brand of diesel rated synthetic oil that I've never seen before.

I decided to use AMSOIL 5W-30 this winter. Cenex 10W-30 conventional is good, but I want something better.

Thanks for the info TwoSlick... . next set of days off I'm gonna have to pedal over to my PetroCan bulk agent and get some pricing from him... .

I have been running Delo 15w40 with excellent results, and was thinking about switching to Delo 400 10w30 for the winter, but now the Group III 5w40 sounds rather interesting.

I'm just signing in here so I will be notified of new post to this thread. I'm curious to hear more about this oil.

Slybones, I forgot to mention that amsoil here in AK is $80 a case(12 qts. ) shipping is allways a killer here. I'm sure that amsoil is top shelf but I'm just happy to find something reasonably priced for those beard frosty mornings.

Sorry too, in feverent need for information I forgot to mention I am interested in the Delo 400 5-40. I use delo 400 15-40 now and was interested in something with a lighter weight for year round use like 5-40.

JohnE, Thanks for the tip about Home of Economy, I get to Grand Forks about once a month, will have to check it out next time I'am in town.

I checked on the Mobil Delvac synthetic, way toooooo expensive, $28. 00 a gallon. Flying J of Fargo sells Royal Purple synthetic 15-40 for $16. 95 a gallon but I do not know that much about it.

I have heard alot about aimsoil but have never heard what they want per gallon. People can post prices on the board and if your a dealer all you have to do is mention that fact. If no one wants to post prices on the board they can e-mail me

Need all the information I can get as yesterday we were hit with our first BLIZZARD of the year and need to change oil to something lighter soon.

Thanks, Ron

Ron,

The Amsoil 15w-40 synthetic will pump fine down to -30F or so ... . If you occasionally see temps below this your really have to go to the Series 3000, which is significantly more expensive. Dealer (wholesale) cost on the 15w-40 is approx $70. 00 for a four gallon case, including shipping. The Series 3000 runs about $35. 00 higher per case ... .

One thing to note is that these group III "synthetics" don't flow nearly as well in cold weather as the PAO/Ester synthetics. If you compare pour points, you can readily see this:

Delo 400, 15w-40 (-42F) - Group II

Delo 400, 5w-40 (-45F) - Group III

Amsoil 15w-40 (-47F) - PAO/Ester

Series 3000, 5w-30 (-60F) - PAO/Ester

Delvac 1, 5w-40 (-65) - PAO/Ester

Brought this thread back to the top... . today I made the switch from dino oil to the Petro-Canada Duron 5W40 synthetic stuff. We'll see how it does... . but I don't know if you can beat it for the price! Regular price in 20 litre pails at my local Petro-Canada bulk dealer is $4. 40 CDN-another $. 30 for 4 litre jugs. They had it on a fall sale for $4. 05-but of course I missed out on that . I realize that it's not in quite the same league as a true synthetic like Amsoil or Delvac-but for my purposes I think it's gonna do the job. I guess oil analysis will tell the tale!

Thanks to Lee Weber and TwoSlick for pointing me in this direction.
