Wonder if anyone has info on oil analysis of recent Delo 400 15/40 right from the bottle - I'm told even unused oil contains small amounts of contaminents that might slightly distort observed readings on used oil, especially when bypass filters are in use that themselves result in extremely low readings. I sorta hate to spend $15 or so getting NEW oil analyzed, but will if I have to...

Any help?

This is an analysis of new Delo 400 15w40 meeting the CI-4 spec.

Al-1

Iron-2

Lead-1

Silicon-5

Sodium-1

Calcium-3476

Magnesium-6

Phos-1190

Zinc-1329

That was new, right out of the bottle unused stuff?

Jeeze I'm surprised at that much contaminents before it's even been in the engine - looks almost like my USED oil after 5000 miles...

Thanks for the info!

Yep, new right out of the bottle.

I think you will find with almost all new oils there are some trace amounts of solids. I don't think this Delo sample is unlike any other unused oil analysis I have seen.

How do you separate the "good" ones from the "bad" ones in an oil analysis?

If silicon STARTS at a 5, and my analysis comes back after 5000 miles at 3 (which it does!), how do I know whether those remaining 3 are good or bad? Same for Iron, lead, etc...

I understand about the calcium and stuff further down the list, but the wear metals and silicon surprise me...

I don't think oil analysis is all that super accurate, the methodologies used may not be bulletproof and variables such as equipment, operators, etc. certainly affect it. I bet if you sent the same sample of oil to the same lab on 2 different dates you'd get different results. Notice how the results are whole numbers, and not taken past the decimal point (ie your Aluminum is reported as 1 not 1. 2 or whatever). That's because when there isn't that much of a certain contaminant or product in the oil it's gotta be pretty tough to analyze the exactly how much there is in there. Ansd the number isn't hard fact, probably more like a good estimate.

I service medical equipment by trade, and during testing evaluate performance and record results. Often readings jump around and it's impossible to record an exact number. You write down the median of the range or the average, using your best judgement and experience. I'm guessing oil analysis testing is similar to this and subject to interpretation and the experience of the tribologist or whatever they're called (oil techie).

In any event, it's interesting to factor those "clean oil" numbers against my typical 5000 mile used oil - my filtering typically REDUCES the original Silicon level by 40%. and Aluminum only increases by 1 ppm - my Iron increases by 6 ppm, and Lead actually reduces by 50%...

Kinda interesting that in SOME wear categories, my filtering over 5000 miles produces oil that is CLEANER than what it started out as...

It would be interesting to see an analysis of dino vs synthetic oil, fresh out of the bottle. Being that synthetic oil is assembled at the molucular level, it should not have unwanted impurties in it.

I am not saying that the level of impurities in dino oil is a problem, but it would be an interesting study. Any Amsoil dealers want to invest $30 in an independent study?

Great idea Ken - that WOULD be very interesting!

If the synthetics start off at zero contaminent level, it sure gives them a small edge right outta the bottle! ;)

HEMI - GREAT pointer - exactly what I was looking for - thanks!

Looks like the Amsoil and other synthetics are slightly lower in contaminent levels, but not enough to get excited about... ;)

Not rocket science

Geeze guys , it is not rocket science, pay the bucks for the useless synthetic or pay the price for Dino. The choice is yours!

The Doge parts will not last anywhere near the Cummins parts.

What could you be thinking. Put reclaimed oil in it!!!

Do you think that Amsoil 30wt HDD would have similar specs to this?

Thanks... ... bgin
