Lightman,

Have you heard anything about Amsoil's new 5W-40? I was reading about it at Freds TDI.

It looks like it won't work in our Trucks. Not ** rated is the first thing I see.

Edit: the ** should be S as in Sahra and H as in Harry.

No need to duck and run, but you misphrased it: maybe Cummins can get Amsoil's approval!!! Now THAT oughta bring the A-crowd outta the woodwork. Hee!

I've been running Delo 400 5W40 for about 50,000 miles now and wanna know what I discovered? Spending money on synthetics is a waste of money and extended drains really isn't all that great. Delo 400 15W40 for me now on.

I read the thread at freds and actually posted about it on here weeks ago.

Looks like freds is disappointed that the new oil wont meet VW 505. 2 or whatever it is, and will be CI-4 rated... shoulld work in our trucks.

However, since delvac 1 will be widely available shortly(relabeled as mobil 1 truck/suv), who needs amsoil? =]

I am running the new Amsoil and it is CI-4 rated. That "CI" must stand for "cash inhand" 'cause it ain't cheap. I swapped an Amsoil air filter I didn't use (switched to the aFe) for the oil, but I also agree with Lightman that high-dollar synthetics are of questionable value and don't do that much (if anything) for me on miles per gallon.

I mean, figger it out: cost of oil plus cost of installing a bypass filter plus cost of oil analysis plus whatever peace of mind is lost knowing that sulphur or whatever accumulates in old oil makes it not worthwhile in my mind.

There's comfort that comes from dumping Rotella 15-40 bought for lots less money at Walmart every 3-5,000 miles. And I know people who've got hundreds of thousands of miles on their truck doing just this.

OK, Amsoil guys, let the flames begin, but I'm just tellin' ya what I think.

I need the 5W-40 for the winters here so I buy that. Now even if it is a pet. based synthetic. I think that is worth $3/Gallon. I go 5000 miles on the filter and then top off then go another 5000 for the oil change. Makes the cost of the oil back down where the wally world oil is
