I found Delvac Synthetic Oil today at a local parts store,I have never seen it before,is anybody runnin' it?I'm using standard Delvac right now,but thinking of switchn' to the synthetic. What I wan't to know is, what intervals should I be changing the oil,at $19 a gallon it would get real expensive to keep changing it at 5000 miles! To the guys that are using Amsoil, how long between changes are you going?

Thanks,Rob

I use it...

I'm going to go to 10,000mi change intervals with a filter change @ 5,000mi... . My last Blackstone Labs oil analysis said I could definitely go longer than the 6,500mi interval that was tested. :D

My Mobil 1 distributor suggested the 10,000mi interval.

Yep, I pay $19/gal for mine...

I use the Fleetguard Stratapore oil filter from Cummins. I would stick with the Fleetguard oil filters... Stay away from Fram!:D

How about WIX?Cummins' is about an hour drive for me. If I have to I'll go to cummins',it's just alooooooooooooooong drive!

Which Store?

Hi RamThis1, at which local store did you find Delvac Synthetic? I live just up the freeway from you, and grew up in your town, so I should know the store.

I used to use Delvac Synthetic in other diesel applications, but could only get it from a lubricant supplier for the company I worked for then.

If you need a filter, I have some in stock here at the farm. You can safely go 10K+ on this oil, just change the filter every 5K or so.

Email me if you need a filter.

I have a Mobil station up here in CT that I'm on pretty good terms with. They get me my Delvac whenever I ask for a case. I don't see why you couldn't do the same in Houston/Galveston

Rob, what weight did you find for this oil? Around here I'm only finding 5-40w. Contacted Cummins they recommended 15-40w in dino or synthetic. Of course they offer "BLUE" which is fully synthetic and meets their weight, "recommendation".

Valvoline Premium Blue 2000 is NOT full synthetic... . it is semi. Not in the same leage as the Delvac 5W40 or Amsoil's Series 3000 5W30.

Price wise Amsoil 15W40 is cheapest, then Mobil 5W40 and most expensive Amsoil's 5W30. I have ran the 15W30 and 5W30. Just started a run with the 5W40. I have gone 24K with a filter change ever 6K for 6 cylcles already.

Up here 15W40 does not cut it unless you have a heat garage or can always plug in.

This Delvac 5W40 has some good numbers.

BTW... it can be found at any Caterpiller dealer sold as 5W40 Full synthetic Diesel oil. Jugs the same funky ones as Mobil uses just black. Here is the specs. http://www.caterpillar.com/products..._data_sheets/_datasheets/englube/pehp7062.pdf

This oil was alittle cheaper at the Cat dealer here then an oil distributor.

JJW-ND,

FWIW, the Amsoil 15w-40 is about the same, if not more expensive than the Delvac1... . A gallon of Amsoil 15w-40 can be had for $19. 50 or so, and the Delvac1 sells for about $19/gal.

Another source for Mobil Delvac 1 5W-40 is where I work http://www.avlube.com/ which has it available online for $81. 39 plus UPS. (no handling charge, no tax) Also have oil analysis kits which in turn I get a back copy of so we can discuss results in detail. One of the major un-discussed advantages of a full synthetic beyond the normal cold/hot weather performance is turbocharger life. Mineral based oils cause coking in the turbo bearing area which eventually leads to failure. The full synthetic base stocks do not coke and thus turbocharger life and performance is greatly extended. Plus the turbo bearings run cooler as the full synthetic disapates heat at a faster rate than does mineral based oil. One of the many reasons turbine engines run full synthetics vs. a mineral based product. Our turbos are miniaturized turbine engines. .

I just looked in the yellowpages...

for oil wholesalers. Paid $78 + UPS. Going to try the rotella synthetic next change. They stock it @ walmart for 18. 88.

Interesting that if you do a search there has never been a report on this site about "Turbo failure" from coking caused by not letting your turbo cool down. Anyone ever have a stock turbo die because it coked from cool down failure???
