Off Roading It's Dakar time again.

We've been heard!

I am on the phone with Denman even as I write this. They have decided to begin producing just the LT305/85R16 size Coyote again. Previously it came in smaller sizes as well... LT285 & LT245 I believe. We've apparently made enough noise that they've decided to go back into production as soon as possible. They are also goin' to alert their sales channels that this is goin' to occur. I will likely hear back from Denman who & where to get them. I'll keep y'all posted.

CyberRanger, given your connections in the industry, maybe you can answer a question for me. I ran some 305/85/16 Buckshot radial mudders on my Jeep awhile back and loved them. Bad thing is that weight rating is only 2500 or so lbs, so I can't run them on a fullsize. I heard there is a 10-ply version out there rated to around 3500, but can't find evidence of it anywhere. Do you know if this is true?

I wouldn't call them connections... just knowin' who to call.

I have the 10 ply 305 Buckshots on my Chevy now. When you go to your dealer, just make sure the ones they order are indeed 10 ply Buckshot Mudders from Gateway/Dunlap & Kyle. They come in LT235/85R16, LT265/85R16 & LT305/85R16. They are still makin' the 6 ply, but I believe they are biased plys. National Tire & Wheel only lists the Radial Buckshot Mudder in a 10 ply 305/85R16 and various 6 plys up to the equivalent of the radial 305.

Frankly, I'd have your local tire dealer call Dunlap & Kyle directly to get you the best price.

The Buckshot name/design is owned by Dunlap & Kyle out of Mississippi and is manufactured for them by Denman. Maxxis Tire (Korean made) has their own version of the Buckshot & may have licensed the name from Dunlap & Kyle although the tire they have is somewhat different from the one Denman makes. The Buckshots as well as the Gumbo Mudders where orginally labeled as "Gateway" which is part of Dunlap & Kyle.

I know very little about the Maxxis Buckshots.

I think those are the tires my friend was talking about. Looks like they've still only got a 2600 lb load rating :(. Thanks, though - I appreciate the help.

OK, I went out & looked at my Chevy... the load rating on the 10 ply 305/85R16 Buckshot Mudders is 3305 single at 65 psi. I got mine from Discount Tire.

I've got a Gateway Outlet just up the road; maybe if I go in and try a different salesperson this time, they can find the tire I'm looking for in their catalog  :D .

Thanks again, CyberRanger - I appreciate the help!! 3305 should work just fine ;).

There's no doubt its made. Sounds to me like someone at their sales desk got a case of the lazies. Funny, its their own tire. My Buckshots have the Gateway logo on the side.

Haha - no kidding :). Do you happen to know offhand the exact diameter of this tire (Coyotes or Radial Buckshots, in the 305/85/16 size) when it's mounted up on a rim and on the vehicle? Will it pass through 35" calipers? My 6-plys measured out at 34 3/4" actual (measured horizontal, not vertical). Thanks again for your help.

I put a sheet rock square on 'em to get a good accurate measurement along w/ the framin' square & they measure 36 7/16" (horizontal). That is on a 6½"x16" steel rim. I would imagine it'd be a bit shorter on a wider rim, such as a 7½"-8½" rim. Narrow rims tend to pull the sidewalls in & make the tire taller.

just to let you guys know ive ordered my denmans and they r only maling the 305 85r 16 and it is a 10 ply. they r 169. 00 from national tire and wheel in wv. i called denman direct and they told me that national tire was going to be the only one carring them because they were the main reason they put that tire back into production,so they let them kinda have the right to be the only one who carries the tire, thought u might want that info, by thw way if u need the #800-847-3287 extension 115

We've got nearly 60K on our Denmans now & will be puttin' new ones on this summer or early fall. They've still got a good amount of tread on them. The dirt/gravel roads around our place are primarily made up of decomposed granite, i. e. , a lot of sharp edges which produces lots of tiny cuts on the treads (almost like siping). This does cause tires to wear faster. They are still wearin' well, though.

We developed a cupped wear pattern b/c the original shocks went from good to bad in a hurry & caught me offguard. Should've put the Rancho RSX9000s on sooner. That'll shorten the mileage life by probably 10K.

The suspension is still stock except for the Ranchos.

You can see the Coyote's on Denman's website by lookin' at their online catalog...

Click on CATALOG, then click on COYOTE A/P.

I got mine thru Discount Tire Co. /America's Tire Co. last time. Although they aren't listed on their website they said they'd order them for me if I want them. Not sure if they'll get them thru National or directly from Denman.

BTW, the earlier vibration problem I had turned out to be a combination of the cupping wear pattern starting, bad OE shocks, a loose draglink end & a lower ball joint goin' bad. None was enough to see by itself, but once all 4 were fixed the problem went away.
