I have done this also the only difference is I get a the new oil ready to go and fill the trans while it is running, keep filling as it is being pumped put, stop when the fluid couler changes. If you start getting behind with the new oil just shut off the engine. You do need at least one extra set of hands to do this.

If you have TDR issue 64, there's a write up on the procedure on page 11 for the earlier 3rd gens with the 68rfe. If you don't have that issue, you can look it up on the digital link at the top of this website under "TDR Magazine", digital magazines.

I have ONE comment, the procedure of operating a oil pump till there is air pumped WILL NOT HARM ANYTHING, You just have to be aware that when the first bubbles come shut the engine off. Residual oil on the gears of the pump are really no different than the preassembley lube that is on the gears of a reman transmission.

I have a hard time believing that... . air mixed with fliud causes cavitation... doing this over and over will cause a problem eventually, maybe not til trans needs rebuilt but... . I was a heavy equipment mechanic for years and have seen what happens to these gear type pumps when sucking air continuously and briefly. if anything... continually pouring the fluid in while letting the return run in a bucket works best but the dipstick tube is not big enough around to supply the volume that the pump puts out... . AND this procedure could almost use three people to perform. With the rebuild prices on autos being in the thousands $$$$, take the risk?

I stated a couple times when I started this thread it is a 2009 2500 4x4. Now I am wondering if everything still applies ?

Sorry I did not go back and read your posts. I thought 4th gen was the only ones that had evic. You said "You say the EVIC gives the transmission temp. ? Guess I need to learn how to retrieve it then. "

I stand by my procedure, I don't know what the trans lines look like on the third gen, I am sure it is not all that dirrerent from the 4th gen.

What I like about my method is you are replacing exactly the same amount as you are removing.

I knew there was a write up in #64. I read it on the TDR calendar . It was a tech tip. I do not have that issue. Thanks a million for the advice on how to get it. I thought I would have to order the entire #64 issue. Thanks!

Alright guys, I am in the middle of the procedure. Everything going pretty good so far. Did encounter one mishap though. Getting the o ring out was a little challenging. Got it though. Problem was when I was trying yo get the new one pressed into place,I damaged it! Thought I would be dead in the water until I could get another. And I knew I would have to buy another filter to get it. Called my local parts store and they had it in stock. Went right then and got it. Entire filter, gasket, and o ring for $14. 95. Half price of Genos. I know it's a crappy filter though. Bought it just for the o ring. Still have to install pan and refill. I do have a silly question though. The B&M drain plug comes with a plastic washer. Does it go on the bottom of pan or on the inside of pan? I assume on the bottom like a normal drain plug but I see how you could put it on inside before the nut that tightens plug. Suggestions please.

Just an FYI for future trans services. The new spin on filter comes with a plastic threaded bushing on it. ATS makes and sells this bushing in aluminum. With the plastic one, if you torque it down too tight, it will crack and break off in the middle, and then your filter ends up in the pan. Damage will occur to the trans. If you don't tighten it down enough, it will vibrate off and fall into the pan. Same problem. I believe the specks for torque is between 6 and 8 ft lbs. You may want to call the dealer to confirm this. And next time, call ATS and order that bushing so you can tighten it down so it won't fall off, without worrying about it cracking in 2. ")
