I think the military still uses a lot of these engines. The M109's and the HEMTT's we had when I was in had Detroits. I believe the M109 had a 400hp 8v71 and the HEMTT had about a 475hp 8v92. They have a very distinct sound. I slept on top of the engine compartment of a HEMTT with the engine running every night for several months. I almost had to buy one when I got home just so I could sleep.

None of them sound quite like a 3 53 in a gamma goat or a skidder. There's a local guy here with a 3 53 in an old F-350. This engine has mastered the art of turning fuel into noise.

I remember telling this old trucker about the series 60s when they came out. When I mentioned about them being oil tight, he said "What?!!! Son, if you got a Detroit that ain't leakin' oil its outta oil!!!!!" :-laf

I watched a 8V92 pop a blower seal one time. He was doing 60 MPH when it blew. When the engine locked up he was doing around 90 MPH. It took 5 miles to suck the pan dry.

We had 16V-71's on the ship in the Navy, they would start and go directly to 1800 rpm, man those things would scream.



A few years ago my father and I went to an antique truck and tractor show, all of a sudden I hear the sound of a detroit, I turn around and there is a 53-56 Ford F-350 dump truck pulling in. The guy pulls in right near where we were and him and his wife get out and pull out their ear plugs. It was a neat little rig with the 4-53.



A guy brings his old Brockway to the big rig pulls at the local fair with a v-12 detroit in it, A buzzin Dozen, man that thing is loud with straight pipes.

Hey Tim, could you give me a heads up as to when and where these type of fairs/shows happen in NY? Sounds like a nice weekend. Not much of that stuff happens down my way.

Twin 8V92's sound REALLY good backing down on an 80# yellowfin tuna in the gulf stream! Best grocery getter ever.

They sound even better at full song tryin' to get back in for the weigh-in. Oo.

I spent five years in the oil field and EVERYTHING was Detroit two-stroke. I enjoyed the 12V-149 the most. Four chargers and twin blowers. 1000+ HP all day and not break a sweat doing it. The 71 and 92 series are tinker toys.

It wasn't that great Scott. It was an old grain truck with a 238 and someone that wasn't to good shifting. He didn't miss any gears. But he was slow shifting.

Too many years!

Drove a 71 KW 13 RR and a 8V71 for many years, they were OK for the flat, but hit the mountains and they went downhill quick. The acessory drive cases were the oil leaking culprits. You could get a brand new truck and within weeks it would start to seep. Where is the video of the detroits with Jakes? Drove a 12V one time, it would pass everything but a fuel stop... Still nothing like the 3408 Cat, it would eat itself every hundred and fifty thousand though.

I worked on a fishing boat in the SanFrancisco bay while in college and it was powered by a 6-71 dry stacked right behind the wheel house. All I can say is thank god for Chevron bilge cleaner, and lots of exhaust stack. The oil/fuel spray cleared the stern so the deck stayed clean.
