I believe that you can't go wrong using Fleetguard, made by Cummins for your Cummins. Get them at a Cummins dealer or order from Geno's garage. The Mopar filter is also made by Fleetguard, they just charge extra to add the Mopar name. I wouldn't use anything else on my truck. Other filters may or may not be OK. There have been problems in the past where the diesel vibrations have broken up some of the media inside some brands of filters and clogged the fine oil passages used to spray cooling oil on the pistons. This will cause early engine failure. Fleetguard is cheap insurance.

When I bought my truck the gentleman was using the Deutsch filters from Autozone. He experience no problems. I don't think they are as cheaply made as the Fram, but they are nowhere near the quality of the Fleetguard. Amsoil filter seem to be of high quality (as far as I know they are made by Hastings to Amsoil specs, maybe I'm wrong here) and the Wix seems to be a decent filter. Personally I use Fleetguard.

Just to set the record straight, there was an interesting article on oil filters in the current issue of TDR. If you look on page 29, you will see that the Deutsch filters are the same as Mobil 1 and K&N, all made by Champion Laboratories. They are a very decent filter, and definitely of higher quality than Fram.

I use Fleetguard # LF3894 and pay $8. 54 from NW Cummins. This is the Stratapore filter. Fuel filter is # FS15979 @ $12. 94. Nothing else will ever go on my truck unless they upgrade.

From what everyone is saying or reading, one can only go wrong w/ a Fram filter.

The Mobil filter has one of the highest eff ratings on 1st pass & gets stuff down to 10Microns. Thats why I went w/ M1 available @ Autozone.

Most well made filters (wix etc filter only down to 25microns)

The only way to go lower than 10m's is to use a by-pass filter.

Remember:
> * Smaller particles (less than 10 microns) cause the greatest
> engine wear.
> * OEM filters are designed to trap particles down to only the
> 30 to 40 micron level.
> "How is this possible? First some background on the subject.
> Oil contamination particles are present in diesel engines from
> the sub-micron size to particles exceeding 40 microns. Today,
> most engine manufactures continue to install and specify filters
> that are designed to be effective in controlling wear particles
> at only to the higher 30 to 40 micron levels.
>
> "It is critical to know that extensive laboratory analysis and
> field studies confirm the fact that 0 to 10 micron sized
> particles cause 3. 5 times more wear than particles larger than
> 10 microns! This fact may sound backwards until you consider
> oil film thickness. Major wear is caused by these smaller
> micron particles because they can enter and compromise the
> critical oil film thickness layer that separate the moving
> parts in your engine such as rings, rods and bearing clearances
> typically designed and engineered to these very same 0 to 10
> micron ranges. "

So for us NON-by-pass users, changing the oil on a regular basis is critical & the only way to obtain long life.
