Ever Get Diesel that Smells like Gasoline?

F*rd D172 engine

I have a friend with a screening plant that is used in his excavation business. The screening plant is powered buy a 3 cylinder Deutz Diesel engine. The problem he is having, is that the engine will not stay running. He says it starts with no problem, and sometimes will run for half an hour. Other times it will only run for 10 minutes. He says it jsut quits like someone turned the key off. He is pretty sure it is a fuel problem. He has cleaned the fuel tank, and replaced all the fuel lines and filters. Does anyone have any ideas what he can look for? Hopefully someone on here has experience with these Deutz engines. I'll be gone to the races all weekend, so I won't be checkin for a reply until Sunday or Monday.

Thanks, Ron...

It is definitely a fuel problem. As long as there are no leaks, you can suck air without leaking fuel, the only other thing would be a bad transfer pump.

Ron, tell your freind to check the oil. Some diesels have fuel pumps that are run by vaccume and if the oil gets to low the pump will not pump fuel and the engine will shut down. It also could be the fuel system relay is getting hot or is about to go out. So he might want ot check those kind of things to.

If memory serves me correctly , they also have a cyl. head over temp shut off . Try taking the side cover off(if so equiped) and clean the cyl. heads especially the cooling fins .

I know that this might seem odd but have him check the cooling fan belt safety switch at the idler. If the belt gets stretched out sometimes the switch will shut down the engine. We have a lot of air compressors and welders with Deutzs and that is one of biggest problems.

does the engine have a shut off solenoid? Or do you have to pull a cable to shut it off. Some diesels I work on have a soleniod that powers up to run and if the 12v is lost the engine shuts down. Some are the other way too if 12v is supplied to the solenoid then the engine shuts down. Don't know if duetz use this method or not, just puttin an idea in your head!

Thanks for the reply's, I'll forward them to my friend. This engine does have a fuel solenoid, and a fan belt switch. Not sure if he has checked these yet or not. Any more ideas out there, I'll pass them on. Thanks again, Ron...

OOOPS! I made a mistake. . I passed this info on to my friend, only to learn that the screening plant with the problem has a 3 cylinder John Deere engine, not a Deutz. Any John Deere specific advice out there for the same problem?

John Deere has two kinds of shut offs one is a solenoid that pulls a lever to shut it down just like the 12 valver. The other is a small solenoid valve mount on the pump. Is about 1" in diameter and maybe 2" tall with a srew terminal on top. It not uncommon for this terminal to work loose and have a bad connection internally.
