Does anybody know of a simple & reliable device to keep track of business miles? I use my truck partly in business and am real tired of writing down starting mileage, ending mileage, subtracting... etc. etc.

Some of the GPS systems can do what you want, but you are getting into a pricey unit to get the features. That would be the only way that I know of besides a notebook/log.

Use the trip counter on your Odometer . Set to 0 at business and record at end of bisness . Save your money for mods. Ron in Louisville ky Oo.

I wish I knew of something out there - I bet there is though. If not, someone needs to invent something.

Keeping track of business miles is a pain in the axle! I gave up on it as my business percentage for this truck is so low and I drive about 100 miles a day round trip for my regular job - and I can't write that off:( :{

I keep mine on a spreadsheet in my PDA. Works pretty good. There are simpler ways to do it like a mileage log from an office supply for a couple of bucks. I did that for several years. The spreadsheet is a little overkill but I'm a gadget freak anyway.

If you have a palm pilot, there is a $10 software package listed as MPG which will keep track of business trips along with fuel, maintenance and such. I've been using it for about a year now. It will give miles traveled on a particular trip and will tally expenses and such. I use it all the time. It will also automatically figure expense per day and miles per gallon. Wonderfull stuff. :)

I work out of my house, so 100% is business Monday thru Friday. Personal on the weekends. We have several vehicles to support the 100% factor. Make sure to keep written records in case you get audited by the IRS. With them, the more detailed is better as they will realize going deeper into your records won't net them much, so they stop the audit. I speak from past experiance.

milage tracking

I use Excel spred sheet.

It wasn't too bad to set up. Excel lets you put in formulas. Start mileage column, end mileage column, total. At tax time print out for the cpa is easy. Do it every week, not too shabby. Just my . 02

pm me And I will e-mail a copy of the spread sheet. It is not fancy.

hi all.

the same company that makes the g-tech pro performance meter also makes a few meters that are designed to calculate mileage for the business drivers. .

here is a link to the one product that they make for this reason, and you can click on the other products on the top of the page to go to their pages. .

milage keeping

Try a palm or handspring. There is a auto log for the program. Can keep track of 8 vehicles and private vs bus. mileage. It will do a lot of other things, too. You can wirte it off as a bus. expense.

i have no clue as to what they run for. i just remember seeing those when i was looking at the specs for that new g-tech pro comp. version. . :)

it is nice to drive, but it needs some bigger balls. . now if i weren't saving up for a 2004, it would be getting a ps2k propane kit... not too bad for a first vehicle eh? got it brand spankin' new off the dealer lot in '97 [co-purchased it with my pop's company. die hard gm fan he is] oh well. maybe i will get the propane, but get it in june 2004 as a birthday present for my and my future ram...

lol!!

I've done the same thing with my car for work.

There's a travel log book that can be purchased for a few dollars at the local Office store (staples. . office max) that is accepted by the IRS. It's only a couple of bucks and it's real easy to get into the habit of quickly jotting down your info cause it's sitting in the car.

Your supposed to use one book per calender year.

-date-where to and from-start OD- end OD

And of course the next entry's start is the same as the end of the entry before... it's real easy to get into the habit. I did it for 2 years.

The trip OD is not used in these "IRS accepted" books. The actual milage OD is used. This way it can be determinded what % you actually used the car/truck for personal Vs business.

yep, finn i am, well kinda. . both my parents are finn, but i was born in canada. . i can speak finnish fairly well [i can speak finn better than my parents speak english] but i never did learn to read or write it. my pop is from hankasalmi [i think that's how it is spelt] and my mom is from kotka
