I had someone tell me that there is no difference in the 10k & 12k axles. That it is just the leaf springs on the 12k are bigger. Anyone else heard this? Also, how do you tell what the wheels are rated at?

Jason

Well that somebody is kind of right. The 10,000# and 12,000# axles use the same hubs and wheel bearings but the axle tube has a thicker wall on the 12000#.

I am not sure of the exact difference between the 10 & 12 k Dexter axles, I think the 12 k is a newer version of the old 10,000 HD. The standard duty 10k Dexter axle used 5-leaf spring pack, 12&1/4 x 3&3/8 inch brakes, and was 5" in diameter. The 10,000 HD used 6-leaf spring pack, 12&1/4 X 4 inch brakes, and was also 5" in diameter. Like "ata" said I think there is a difference in tube thickness also.

The 10k and the 10k HD is the brake size, and I believe the tube is the same. For the cost, go with the 12k. The 10k HD is a waste of money, they are within $100 of the 12k. The 12k axle uses a heavier tube and the brakes off of the 15k.

10k tube - 5. 0 x . 25" brakes 12-1/4" x 3-3/8" 8 bolt

10k HD tube - 5. 0 x . 25" brakes 12-1/4" x 4" 8 bolt

12k tube - 5. 0 x . 44" brakes 12-1/4" x 5" 8 bolt

15k tube - 5. 0 x . 44" brakes 12-1/4" x 5" - This used to be a 10 bolt but dexter has gone to a strange metric 8 bolt pattern.

TX Gooseneck..........

So with a heavier axle does that also come with heavier leaf springs? What I am trying to do is figure out how I can up the weight rating of my 40' GN at the most cost effective price. Right now I have two 10K Dexters under it with vacuum over hydraulic brakes.

Any chance I could get a set of 10k axles that aren't dualed? I want the capacity but would rather stay with single tires. I can run 19. 5's for weight capacity.

TX Gooseneck... ... . Right now I have 2 10K's, the NON HD 10k's. I have put 30K on the trailer before but that was not on purpose. I would like to haul 20K comfortably. Maybe I worry to much. There are probably alot of guys hauling that weight all the time without problems. With a gooseneck, from what I have seen, no matter how heavy the axles are, you still have to carry that weight over them. Go to far forward and the neck starts flexing/bending. I am pretty tapped out right now, just trying to get opinions and options, and look for the cheapest route.
