Competition Here we go again!

Competition Any up coming dyno events?

My computer won't download the DHRA rulebook right, I nees to download another program to read them. I wanting to find out for sure the rules on the driveshaft loops. What's the rule's on the u-joint shilds? How long do they have to be? And how many loops do you need for the driveshaft itself? If I remember right you must use 1/4" steel and I can't remember the size for aluminum. One last thing, whats the biggest diameter the loops can be around the driveshaft?

You need Adobe Acrobat to read the downloadable rulebook.

Driveshaft Loops:

All trucks must have at least six inch wide u-joint shields around the rear u-joint constructed of at least 1/4 inch steel or 3/8 inch aluminum that will safely contain the u-joint and the end of the rear shaft. All shields must be securely mounted to the vehicle. Any front shaft u-joint that is visible from the side of the truck must be shielded to contain the u-joint and the end of the shaft.

So you need one loop at the rear and, if the front ujoint is visible from the side of the truck, one on the front ujoint. The have to be long enough to contain a disintegrating ujoint and contain the now-free end of the propeller shaft. As there is no maximum diameter specified, I would suggest they they be big enough to remain adequately clear of the shaft and ujoint during maximum suspension travel.

Thanks fest3er for the reply. Whats it say for the number of driveshaft loops? Is it 2 for the rear and one for the front? Just trying to get this clear so I can start building mine.

The rules only mention the rear, and the front if it is visible. A good rule of thumb is to look at the ujoints. If you think parts from a disintegrating ujoint could be propelled into or toward spectators or workers, put a shield around it.
