Smarty CR software updates

I am just looking for a little more power while towing and a possible mpg gain. I Already have an MBRP exhaust and full gauges. In the process of researching intakes right now also. Looking for some reliable power with minimal EGT gains as I have already had it to 1400+. I love the features of the Smarty, but don't want to spend that much $$$ for something I won't use to it's potential! I have no desire for any other big power mods in the future, this will be it so what would you guys reccomend?

TIA . . .

If you get the puck you will also want/need a boost fooler as it does not do boost fooling and your egt's will be higher than you want. The boost fooler will help that.

They are pretty similar from what I understand other than that? I have never seen one and do not know how it is tuned though.

The diablo is adjustable and the XZT is not but, the XZT was meant to be used slightly differently than what they are doing with the puck.

Xzt

I did exactly what you are looking at doing. I put on the Quad XZT about a year ago and gained an average of 1mpg around town, and averaged 1. 5 to 2mpg increase while towing a 10,000lb 5'ver. I really didn't notice any decrease in EGT's though because with the little extra umph I use the go pedal a little more now also... :-laf The XZT does not make anywhere near the power of some other boxes out there, but it is a noticeable power increase while towing... plus I don't want to spend the money on a transmission just yet!!!

In terms of fueling, if you do not want to do transmission mods, I would not use more than a 30 HP upgrade. With the exhaust and intake mods, you will want a boost fooler, so a plug-in box is likely a better choice than a downloader. I would think that a Quad product, an Edge EZ, or the VA C3. 1 would be your best bet. Look in my sig and you can see how I voted with my $$.

As far as intakes go, it appears that like many of us, you are budget conscious. For the power levels you are currently looking at, I would seriously consider the Home Depot airbox mod with the addition of a better panel filter like the Amsoil or the PG-7. This will set you back less than $100. In my experience pulling up a miles long 6% grade with an 8,500 pound trailer, there is literally no difference between that mod and the $300+ intake system I bought. This is with real data I gathered and published on this site a couple of years ago. If bling is also important to you, by all means order an intake.

Let us know what you choose,

If you like running wires inside your cab, then possibly detection from dealership finding where wires went through firewall and loosing your warranty then go with the XZT.

If you like a simple plug-in in the engine compartment and alot lower price in a module then the diablo power puck is your choice.

For ease of use and install and low egts and great power I'd go with the XZT also... Works very well for me... :)

Don't mean to get off the subject, but, how do you like the Predator stack? I was considering this downloader or the VA3. 2. Kind of leaning towards the VA right now.

I like the stack a whole bunch. Very smooth and powerful. And I'm considering adding a duration only box as well... VA3. 2 or BD's X-power minus timing. Both claim 130hp. Been on the fence especially with VA's C5 coming out soon... .

Sort of a goofy post? It is not like you drill the firewall. You simply slide the wiring through a rubber grommet that is already in place?

Not to mention you still need to run the toggle switch through the exact same spot on the Diablo?

Other than that the install is the exact same.

With the XZT you can also bypass the module in about 3 seconds with a bypass plug. This is handy if someone else needs to drive the truck or you want to go back to stock really quickly.

Another advantage of the XZT is it has built in boost fooler. I've had a standard box (quad) install for over a year. It is a hugh difference over stock having the extra 60hp while towing my 11+K Fifth wheel. I've notice lower egts because I'm not pushing as hard on the pedal. I also have the passing power now. As for the hole in the grommet I have so many other electrical items running through that, that it wouldn't be an issue. I just remove the module before a trip in. I have my transmission serviced by the dealer every 25K and just had a CP3 replaced because of a cold weather leak.

The diablo claims to be undectable but do your homework it's seem to wipe out the key counts and trip data

How can the power puck wipe out the key counts?????

Now if you mean the predator down loader maybe Yes, but the question asked was for the diablo power puck.

I guess I should have more clear on what I was referring to.
The XZT box is not sealed and there fore has to be installed inside the cab.
The power puck is sealed and is installed under the hood in the engine compartment. You could also leave the switch in the engine compartment there by not having to run wires inside the cab. Yah, you would have to stop and switch power levels but at least there are different power levels for your choosing. The XZT only comes with one power level and is not changeable.

Both offer stock or module off mode. The power puck does it with a switch. The XZT you have to remove your module from under the dash, unplug it, Then plug in the by-pass wire. Unplugging the module may sound easy but when I sent mine back for a refund I couldn't get it to unhook from the wiring harness so I just sent it back all plugged in. Makes me wonder how many times one could plug and unplug the wiring harness from the box before something breaks? The circuit board didn't feel like it was attached inside the box very well and being as it's not sealed for the wiring harness connection makes me question how many times it can be unplugged and plugged back in before something breaks.

All of you have mentioned very good things to keep in mind. I am now thinking of MAYBE just a boost fooler, what is everyones thoughts on this mod????

thanks for all the responses so far. . .

:D

The Hp gain with just a boost fooler would be minimiual if any. The advantage of a boost fooler is to lower your EGT's.

An Intake system will not gain you any or maybe minimual Hp.
An exhaust system will not gain you any or maybe minimual Hp.
They will not gain you any MPG increase either, if best so minimual you would need special equipement to monitor it.

These systems are used for suport systems if you go to high Hp gains.

Do a search on modified air boxes if you really think you need better flowing air. Unless you go big on Hp that's really all you need.

Go to these websites and do a little research on each product and decide which would be better for the dollar your spending.

www.quadzillapower.com = XZT for towing.
www.diablosport.com = power puck for towing.
www.edgeproducts.com = edge EZ for towing.
www.tstproducts.com = econo module for towing.

here are some websites that sell at wholesale prices, some are site sponsors, which I recommend.

www.thoroughbreddiesel.com
www.xtremediesel.com

Are you sure about that as well? On a stock truck the power gain will be minimal. On trucks that have aftermarket fueling, especially if it is over about 100hp gain then it is pretty common to gain 20 or more HP at peak boost levels.

The question is on a stock truck for a little extra Hp. So Yes, it will not gain any and if it does it would be so minimal you wouldn't be able to tell.

Now if the question would have been on trying to modify a truck for alot of power then you better have a boost fooler or your loosing alot of potential from your other modifications.

I have unplugged and plugged back in my XZT box several dozen times now without a hitch. This is because I was trying other programs on my Diablo that added pressure. I always seem to go back with the XZT and use the other programmers without their added pressure. XZT is the best seat of the pants for me so far with my other mods. JMHO... :)
