modded rail???

OK, I have a long(er) than normal start problem, that is oftentimes associated with a "kickback" during a cold start. It started this about 4k miles ago... I have since driven to New Mexico.

I am fearing an injector, but tell me what you think:

Rail pressure is normal... 6k psi idle, 16k cruising 65mph, upwards of 26k-ish WOT. FCA was replaced around 100k and the rail bleed valve was tested at the same time.

Oil smells sweet, but not like fuel... I use Rotella... it feels good between the fingers, doesn't appear diluted any with fuel. The oil level has not moved (if anything, its down), but the oil itself is black (but it should be with almost 10k on 1. 5 gallons of it and 20k on the other 3 gallons). My UOA 10k ago indicated no fuel... I'm in the process of getting bottles to send a new sample into Blackstone (I'm on the road)...

Truck idles eerily smooth and quiet around 750RPM IIRC (maybe the altitude?). There are no odd noises, other than the typical 140k mile 3rd gen noises.

I'm blowing tons of black smoke if I try... but that is really no indication since I am in New Mexico at around 7k feet (its more/less typical for this truck at this altitude) but I feel it might be "excessive" for a completely stock truck. Once it gains RPM and boost, the smoke goes away... but I can easily smoke the guy behind me by just rolling into the throttle slightly. The company has a 2007 2500CTD 5. 9L auto (completely stock) and it makes zero smoke on the same terrain (auto versus manual??)

Fuel mileage is surprisingly good... I average 20mpg for the majority of this trip... the last tank was 18mpg, but I fought a head wind for most of that tank.

And the truck has had all the current flashes done up to 2005... white smoke and mileage.

Any ideas??? Anything else I could easily check in a parking lot?

How hard are injectors to replace? Is this a major undertaking, or an afternoon's worth of work? (I have all my tools with me)

How many miles on fuel and air filters, cheapest and easiest things to do first. Replacing injectors... = major PITA! Nozzles you'd be looking at around $800 for 6,+ injector bodies around $400 a piece:eek: parts only, IIRC. Best to pull them, get them checked, then decide.

Since I run a FASS, I haven't touched the fuel filter in almost 50k miles... but I still have 17psi to the CP3 at idle... and more than 7psi at WOT.

Air filter has less than 20k on it... and if that was the case, I would have expected a decrease in mileage? Maybe I'll go check the air filter...

$1200 still beats being FORD.

Checked the filter... the filterminder was barely pulled in, just enough to feel it reset. The filter itself had the typical amount of dirt and bugs you would expect... the filter pleats were still white.

I'll see about picking up a new filter this weekend... too busy right now, not to mention I don't even know where the parts house is at around these parts!

I also had a brain fart, and ran back out and stuff the code reader on it... no codes.

Sounds to me like some sort of sensor issue ... ... ... ... like all of the planets are having a hard time aligning?

OK, would this be the symptoms of a "worn" or "eroded" injector(s)???

I did some research and some of the symptoms match what I got...

OK, just to update this thread...

Not sure it is related, but changing the bypass and adding 6 quarts of makeup oil seems to have solved the issue... running the same fuel, same fuel and air filters, no other changes to the truck.

The hard start has been gone since I changed the bypass and added makeup oil... my latest UOA came back a little rough, but nothing flagged as bad enough to warrant changing.

I have logged over 1500 miles since changing the oil/filter, and not one hard start. At this point, I can only point to the oil, although I have no explanation for it.

OK, scratch the oil thought... it is very intermittent...

Although I need to further investigate, I watched the voltage meter on my GPS this AM drop to under 10. 5Vs when I was starting (although it started fine) and wonder if I might have a battery going south??

As an update, this wierd starting was most likely due to a failing injector... the one that failed last night.

The voltage was a problem for the slow start, and I found a bare wire that was causing a rough idle...

So, that's most likely what the problem was...
