Congestive heart failure

I'm only 38 and the Dr. tells me I'm a prime candidate. I hope to prove him wrong.

Tryglycerides... . 1800++

Cholesterol... 250+

Been on meds for this for over 8 years. Last test says the meds are screwing with my liver function numbers. AGGGH. On a different medication now. :(

I'm not very overweight (5'11" 200 lbs), nor do I indulge in McD's B'King type foods, it's just in my genes.

Were pullin for ya T. D.

Eric

Figure this:

Cholesterol: 197

Tryglycerides: normal

BP: 125/85 typical

5'9" 225

Same here on fast foods...

Perhaps is the rush of driving a CTD that is too much for a normal heart :D ?

Do you have any signs of cardiac enlargement? Do you know your ejection fraction?

Mine appears to be a rythm problem.

Sure wish I would have INSISTED on an annual chest X-ray :{ , could have caught it MUCH sooner...

Sorry to hear it Tejas

My approach is much different and I'm not saying it's for everyone.

I don't go to the doctor at all except to get put back together after accidents. I'd rather not know what's going wrong with me. My feeling is worrying about an aliment is worse than the aliment itself. Once you are diagnosed with a problem there's no way you're going to quit thinking about it. I trust doctors about as much as a Dodge dealer. Seems like many of the maintenance drugs have side effects worse than the problem.

My rational to not practice preventive medicine is that just one hundred years ago the average lifespan was 32 years, even now days it's not much over 40 worldwide. I don't know where you stand age wise but I've already beat the odds and the rest is cream. I hope to be like my 92 year old neighbor who died falling off his tractor probably trying to grab a cigarette he dropped because he was drunk. His autopsy said he should have been dead thirty years ago. His heart was enlarged, arteries clogged up and body full of tumors, yet he worked till the end with no complaints. If I die tomorrow that's ok too.

I feel the best medicine for you, though not only medicine since you now know about the aliment is to buy a looser fitting pair of pants and practice thinking about sex instead of your heart every time it comes to mind.

I'm sorry if Dr illflem's advice (would you trust a Dr with a name like that!) seems to belittle your condition, that's not my intention at all. Good luck.

I like.

I like Dr illflems advice myself. But, I had a high cholesterol level of 260 and was turned on to flax seed. Within six months my cholesterol dropped to 155. I grind up about three tablespoons in a coffee grinder every morning and mix it with some orange juice. The Dr couldn't believe the results. I am at 204 and 5'7' , hardly any gut, just broad in the shoulders, and thick in the head!!!! Keep the faith and exercise!!!!!:D

Champane,

Where do you get your flax seed, is it the same as used to slick out your Horse avalible from the feed store I would like to try that recipe myself, as my cholesterol is also high at 240. I' 6'6" and 265 with noassatall and would like to get back down to 225#

Thanks, TJ

Tejas, keep your chin up.

My wifes grandpa just died of CHF last weekend, he was 84 years old and lived well right up till his heart stopped. He had the rythm problem and valve problem since he was drafted into the army in WW2. Went all through the war and 30 years on the job. Retired and enjoyed 28 years of whatever the heck he wanted to enjoy. You can live with it a long time.

Flax Seed is a good thing to use. There is a lot of info on the WWW and the seed is readly available in health food and organic food stores. We pay about $2. 00 per pound for organic certified seed in one pound packages. It can be found at a less price depending upon the quality. It is recommended to use the seed with a high grade protein like reduced fat cottage cheese.

I was directed to the flax seed when I read the book "How To Fight Cancer and Win" written by William L Fischer. The ISBN is 0-915421-18-6. It was very informative.

I'm with Dr. illflem---but this last summer, I decided that at 68 yrs old, I might develop some problem so decided to get into the VA system in case I need it when I start to get old.

At my initial exam, the lady DR. heard something she did not like, so, into a bunch of test----echo cardiogram, EKG, stress EKG etc.

Conclusion--They say I had a heart attack long ago that left one side of my heart not moving when its supposed to be beating

In July 1981 I went to the hospital with chest pains and spent a couple sessions hooked up to a bunch of stuff in the cardiac care unit, but after about a day, they sent me home saying they guessed I did not have a heart attack after all. Now with the more advanced equip. they say I did and that it left significant damage.

The odd part is that from in the 70's till 1994, we raised hay and with in a couple days after that event I was out bucking hay as usual, and have carried on since with no known problem.

I am glad I did not live the past 21 years knowing I had heart damage and was at risk for another attack and worrying about it---might have missed some great back country elk hunts :>)

Now I figure its way too late to start worrying about it, so said a loud NO THANKS to the DR's suggestion that I start taking statin drugs and rat poison--those things can kill ya!

Did ya'll realize that the number one cause of death in the USA is medical mistakes??(that is adding together MD+nursing staff+medicine errors).

By the way, being skeptical of medical people, I went to a specialist independent of the VA and asked for a heart work up without telling him the VA conclusion---he reached the same conclusion.

Survivor story

Co-worker's mom has had CHF for years and drugs are working just fine for her. There are lots more medicines available than there were a few years ago. You may have to bounce around a little before you find one that really works well for you and as your lifestyle and body change through the years, you may have to adjust the doses or change meds.

Think positive and talk honestly to your doctor about worries and side effects. If you go with something herbal, tell your doctor what you are taking. Just because it's natural doesn't mean it won't have interactions with other meds...

Jean

Well I am pulling for you.

On the upside, my grandpa has had CHF for about six years. With watching his sodium intake and medication. His is running around every year elk hunting and steelhead fishing to his hearts content "pun intended" It is amazing to what the medications and the medical field in general is capable of doing. Keep your head up, I believe you will see many more years come and go.

With Prayers

Mark

Tejas, looks like you have a couple of stories here that should help bring your spirits up. Easy to say, but worrying about it will probably make it worse.

Prayers are on the way.

George

Tejas,

Hang in there man. Diet, excercise, and do what the doc tells you. My wife is a cardiac surgical nurse. It still blows my mind to hear the stories of what they can do nowadays. There are limits, of course, but like others have said here, be as positive and optimistic as you can. And that's what prayer is for... I'll send mine.

Jim

Thanks for all the thoughts, prayers and support. We lost our 19 yr old son to lymphoma 3 years ago and not ready for more probs.

Glad to hear the survivor stories, but not too happy that Dr mistakes are the #1 killer. I will look into organic flax seed, anything that grows in the dirt is probably good.

Death is definate for us all, only when and where and how, you are much better not seeing it comming.

illflem, I like your advice mainly not taking it (Dr talk) too seriously.

Salt, reduced eating :( , and exercise already started.

Next appt is Jan to go over all the results.

Thanks again

:)

Tejas,

My most sincere condolences for you and your family on the death of your son. Been there, done that, bought the t-shirt, but still haven't put it on. My son died almost 8 1/2 years ago. He would have been 30, yesterday.

Listen to the doctors - they have the medical training and knowledge we don't. They come to us when they have car problems because they know we can fix it - we go to them with people problems because we know they can fix us.
