doing typical maintainance. Just finished changing oil and fuel filter. Turned key to prime. Heard bzzzz then glunk. Normally what I try to do is to turn key then turn again which lets the pump prime and fill with fuel. Now when I first turn the key, its sounds like above. Anybody hear this before? Possible lift pump failure?

Thanks

The OEM LP will run for 2 seconds every time the key is turned to the Run position. I think it is to pressurize the system before startup. Mine does the same thing.

Yeah. I turn on the key and let the pump do it's 2 sec. pump, then I bump the starter and the pump will then run until the system is all full. Then start it up and it runs smooth. Never heard a "glunk" though.

edit: glump to glunk

I took a closer listen to mine and have to admit that there is a noise when the liftpump cycle ends. I can't describe it as a glunk exactly - more of a soft gulp similar to the first perk of an electric coffeepot at 2:00 am when the rest of the house is sleeping. But a noise nevertheless, and a mystery to boot. I can't say whether or not the noise has always occured since I never payed such close attention before. Could it be that you were also for some reason giving a closer attention to the process than you usually do? Or perhaps it was quieter than usual where you change your filter and so now you can hear what may always have been but not always been heard?

Its very possible I was listening more carefully, since my truck is approaching 55k miles without a lp change. Just wanted to try and confirm this was or was not unusual.

Think of the happiness you will feel when it comes time for your next filter change and your liftpump gives out that "glunk" as you finish the job - a signal to you of it's continuing life.

Mine has done this since day one. SOunds like someone taps on the bottom of the Poly fuel tank with a fist. Not real loud but noticable. I have not had a problem with the LP (yet) but it seems like it on the way down. But like I said the sound has been there since I drove it off the dealer lot.

Hope this helps

If this "glunk" is more like a low bass tone, then on the '99 it's probably the ABS "turning on". Just a coindence that it's at the end of the 2 sec. LP cycle. A friend's '00 doesn't do it because of a ABS change.

I don't hear any glunk ,bang , klang in fact I don't hear much of any thing . Deff in each ear to the extent that no sounds like crickets ,birds , wispers, glunks ,bangs etc , Thats one good reason to get a full time gauge and it tell what the lift pump is doing before starting two second run then shows the psi as pump runs to start and maintain the motor full time . No need to hear it . Ron in Metro Louisville KY:eek: :)
