Since when do 98 12 valves use an in tank pump back then or ever as a replacement. They were never retrofitted with an in tank pump and wouldn’t provide enough or the proper pressure even if they did do it

Agreed, no retrofit. Besides, Who would ever do that when you've got a mechanical pump that is 3 times as reliable? This mechanic likely was confused with the 98.5-24 24 valve engines.

I did bring to the attention of the mechanic just to be clear of the possible confusion and stated I think 3 times that it was a 98 12 valve and not a 24 valve. Maybe he wasn't listening, didn't care, had a superiority complex I don't know. I made it a point to bring to his attention any mods and including recent work done including changing the fuels lines and kdp fix.

Ok guys, they are still arguing with me that their mechanic is correct. They are saying I need Mopar pump # 04897668AG and conversion kit # 68003865AB. Hopefully there's a part's guy on here who can verify.

You can set up a free account on QuickServe and enter the ESN on your engine data plate for this info.

I am not a parts guy nor did I sleep in a Holiday Inn last night but I believe the part number for the correct pump is 68044569AA (which by the way can be had from Genos Garage, Wholesale Mopar and others for just over $100).

The part number the other guy gave comes up nothing on a quick search

Interesting that this dealer is oblivious to the fact that they're trying to have you let them install a fuel pump for not only the wrong engine but also a fuel pump incapable and not designed to supply the necessary fuel pressures for the P7100 injection pump to operate. Plugging in the correct VIN number should alert them to this error too...

I see a in tank pump for a 24 valve truck. I knew about the 3 gen “update” but I guess there’s one also for the late 2 gens with the problem pump.

This thread has me shaking my head in disgust. Clearly the "mechanic" thought he was working on a 24V in which case the in tank retrofit isn't a bad solution...if he indeed verified fuel supply was the problem. He clearly didn't. You've proven your lift pump works fine and you likely just need to replace a cheap relay for the solenoid. Unbelievably bad diagnosis from the dealer, good luck on your fight.

I need a Dodge parts guy who can verify this. I've been given 4 different numbers now(6800854AB, 68003854AB, 04897668AG, and 68003865AB) (now my head aches).

I’m working on this..but I believe that the numbers listed above are for 98-02 with two different capacity fuel tanks and the other two are for 03-05 models with two different capacity fuel tanks.

Edit, Wayne is correct below.....I should have checked that out, multitasking poorly today..

Waiting for some help from my friendly dealer so we can all be sure...

What I see on google.
First number is missing a digit so ng.
68003854AB is the correct mechanical lift pump for your 12 valve engine.
04897668AG is a 98-04 in tank pump for 35 gallon tanks. Edit- this should read 98.5 24 valve trucks.
68003865 AB is a in tank pump for 24valve, ‘01-02 VIN6.
