Well today I was driving home from work and I went to pass some lady, and I heard a loud pop sound. I looked back and I was throwing a ton of black smoke and then it swithched over to a light grey color. The truck was running real rough and lots of that light colored smoke was still coming out when I pulled into my driveway. I shut my truck off and popped the hood. No oil insight on the motor. I checked the oil and no bubbles on the dipstick, so no antifreeze in the oil. Antifreeze hasn't changed color either, so no oil inthere. I plugged in my smarty and checked for codes and nothing.

I then checked all my boots and turbo and all good to go there. I started the truck up again and it idles fine, no smoke, rev the motor and I get a puff of black smoke like ususal. I then took it for a spin down the the block and it drove fine until I hit about 15psi of boost and then the light grey smoke started flowing out and the truck died. I put it in park, let the truck sit for a minute and turned around and went back home.

Why does it idle fine and run ok when I'm driving slowly, but as soon as I build boost and put a load to the truck this happens? What do you guys think? Is there something else that I could be missing? Any help would be appreciated.

Damn, Sure does sound like a poped intercooler tube or intercooler itself. HAve you noticed any loss of coolant? OR any coolant in the oil? or vice versa?

That's what's wierd, no holes in the intercooler tubes or intercooler itself. No loss of coolant, and no antifreeze in the oil. Also, my egt's weren't super high since it happened only a few blocks from my house so I didn't drive it much after it happened.

I did take it for a spin about 30 minuets later and it ran fine until I hit about 15 lbs of boost and then it started smoking white and the truck died. I did talk to a couple of other guys and they said if I did blow the head gasket, it blew internally and that's why the oil and antifreeze aren't mixing together and no sign of oil on the block. I don't want to tear my motor appart if this isn't the real problem, but it's seems like it is. Any other suggestions I should look over before this project takes place?

id pressure your intake before your go any further. make up a fixture that will connect to the inlet of your turbo and put about 10psi of air presure to it. you will find your leak. i realy does sound like you blew somehing... in a not so visable place.

Well, I takled to John @ Floor it Diesel and he told me that he thinks it is my TST box. He said he has a guys truck in right now that did the same thing (but this guy thought he'd blown an injector) and john checked the fuses in the tst box and one of them was blown. He replaced the fuse, and disconnected the tst and all is good.

I checked my fuses and none were blown, so I'm going to take the unit off and see what it does. John said the white smoke and rough idle is from the tst box malfunctioning and advancing the timing way to much when pressure is built. I'll keep everyone informed when I get a chance to get to it.

Well it was the tst box. The board didn't look fried, the fuses we all good, so there must be something internally that went wrong. I'm going to send my tst back to have it fixed. Just thought I'd share this info with you guys. Boy am I glad it wasn't the head gasket.
