Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Couple questions....

I paid $150 for an NV4500 that came out of an '00-'01 I believe... it was traded in as a core at a salvage yard. The guy said it popped out of gear...

I pulled the top cover off, and saw what looked like half of a broken shift fork pad from the 5th/rev shift fork just laying there... so basicly, the fork has no pads.

everything else looks pretty good just based on my quick inspection w/ the top, bearing retainer, and tailhousing removed... all gear teeth and synchro teeth look good, etc. has the 5th gear nut locked and staked... only thing I could see without totally tearing it down was the missing pads.

so did I just get a decent transmission for cheap?!? :D never heard of shift fork problems on these trannies...

Forrest, man did you get dumped on. BUT, I'm a compassionate kind of guy, so "Not only will I give you your money back, I'll pay shipping to my house". Just to help ya out guy.

Good luck, RJR

that's kinda what I was thinkin' :p

it came through a friend of a friend... the guy deals in a lot of wrecked/salvaged CTD's, and took this transmission as a core... the guy said it just popped out of gear, but we were all kinda skeptical that that was all that was wrong.

I figured it was worth $150+ as a core... looks like I mighta lucked out! :D

Forrest

Forrest . . are you replacing one ??

Reason I ask . . I need a top cover off one and am looking . . if your junking one I 'd love to buy the cover from it at a reasonable price :D

The one that came out of my wrecked Dually has a crack in the shifting tower[non repairable]... I'm going to use it in my CJ7 behing a s/b chevy stroker motor

Slow down, your gona have it fixed before your manual gets there :D

Check the faces on the shift collar for dammage, if it's scuffed up much it will eat the new pads fairly fast.

Jared,

I didn't even look at the mail till last night AFTER I cracked the transmission open! It was a nice surprise. I really appreciate you sending me that info!!!!

when you say faces on the shift collar, do you mean the ring that the shift fork rides in? the one that's moved forward when you put it in reverse? I'll definately check that out! thanks!

Wyllies,

sorry, I'm not junking one... you might try Standard Trans or Blumenthal's for a top cover. The transmission that's currently in my truck is still working well. I plan to go through it when it comes out and keep it as a spare.

UPDATE:

been busy/lazy lately... finally had enough time/money to call Standard Trans. they said they'd do repairs for $175 labor + parts. sounded good to me as I could just drop it off and pick it up later w/ new synchros/bearings/etc.

well, I went out to the garage to button the thing back up and found that the tip of the main shaft is all chewed up!! well, now I'm buying a main shaft, so I decided to dig a little deeper just to see what the rest of it looked like.

I'd never been that far into a manual transmission before! there really isn't much to it. getting that damn 5th gear nut off without the wrench was fun!

anyhow, everything looks good except that dang main shaft!

the kicker? it's a fully splined shaft!!!

stinks 'cuz I don't have the mainshaft budgeted yet... now, I could assemble it msyelf and put that $175 towards the shaft, but still... oh well, thems the breaks...

Forrest

I WISH it was the input shaft... it's the tip of the mainshaft... where the caged needle bearing rides between the input shaft and the main shaft... an input shaft is only like $80... the mainshaft is $280!

oddly enough, the inside of the input shaft looks decent... I have a feeling someone's been inside this thing at some point and just put a new bearing here and there to get them down the road. still confused about the fully splined main shaft. do the later trannies come w/ that shaft from the factory?

Not that I have heard of - Sounds like someone put the splined shaft in there and might have buggered it up while doing the job.

nah, this is clearly bearing wear... you'd have to try REALLY hard to replicate this kind of damage w/ readily available hand tools ;)

what a bummer... oh well.
