Did I screw up with the SRW

Here's another twist on this long beaten to death thread. I bought my first Dodge/Cummins dually because I liked the looks of it. It was a lean mean pulling machine. I did not need a dually to pull my 29' 5er, but I found that it was far better and much more stable than pulling it with my Furd gasser. Then I decided to purchase my huge Cabover (11'-3") because I had the truck for it. I now have a new dually with the same camper. I love my Mexican dually and I can still say, "It's lean mean pulling machine" :-laf

Geo... FWIW I run a BigFoot camper bringing the truck to 11,500 and it all handles like a dream without weight transfer bars or bags. I use a 2. 5" spacer between the overloads and the stops to get them in play when I put the camper on. Stock tires (E) only get a little warm in summer. My 02 had Rickson's and Rancho's and ran like a sports car with the camper. Both SRW's. I use KORE shocks for backroad and washboards. IMHO the 'stability' thing with DRW has to be for roll-over because the frame, spring, axle etc are all in same relation as SRW so the wider foot print (and extra sidewalls) protect from roll over. Fivers can start a roll over with the trailer and take the truck finally so training wheels are good there. Campers too for that matter. I pull off and park into or away from the wind when it is that bad. George

I'd be more concerned about the short bed. When we bought our 5th wheel a 32 ft Jayco with 11,500 gvw and 1800 pin weight the dealer asked me if I had a long bed or a short bed. I of course have a long bed. And they said good because they don't recomend pulling this big of a trailer with a short bed. Even with all the fancy hitches for short bed trucks they said they wouldn't advise it.

An example!

Have a friend (in OR) with a 04. 5, SRW, short bed,

48RE - tows an Alpenlite 5th that weighs 12# empty,

he figures 14# loaded.

Been to Alaska 4 times and lots of other long trips -

the kicker is it's a 2500!

No doubt over weight - but it's a Dodge Cummins!

Says only thing he wishes he had done differently

is a 3500 and 4. 10's.

Unless you want to pull a really long (heavy) 5th,

you should be OK.

I might add - I bought the same (yours) truck,

and - not worried.

As one that has gone from a 2500 srw to a 3500 Dually, the difference in stability while towing is simply dramatic. With the srw going by a semi in the left lane was an adventure. With the dually, I hardly notice it.



I do not think a mistake was made in purchasing the SRW. It is NOT unsafe to tow with, it is also fully capable of during your job. It will just be a matter of having to be on your toes during crosswinds and bypassing big trucks...



Now, for those that think the dually is a hassle around town: I thought that too until I bought one

What type of trailer are you towing? I have gone by semis and been passed by them and never feel a thing with my 5th wheel in tow. My 5th wheel hitch is also a double pivot so perhaps that makes a difference. I keep reading all the stability claims and I cannot see any difference, my buddy has a '04. 5 dually and it feels the same as mine.
