Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Did the 12v's have 53's?

I've got a 97 12v engine lined up, but the owner can't read the numbers, and I'm too far away to see for myself.



My question to you guys is this: in the 1997 model year, were any engines made with the 53 block?



It's comming out of a 97 2wd 5 speed.

I don't know about the 97's but I know the 98's had the #53.

I was personally involved with a 97 truck that had a 53 like crack in the block. I can't say wheter it was a 53 or not because it was before I knew anything about them and didn't know to look for the number. It's the only one I've heard of to date.

My 98 is a #53. It's very possible the 97's have them too. Especially if it's a late 97.

How do you tell if it is a "53" block?? Is there a certain number on the engine ID tag on the timing case??

Look down below the injection pump on the block, it's two big stamped letters.

No, but I figured the only way to really know would be to call cummins.



AND: you can't search for anything less than 3 characters... so 53 is invalid.

On one of those threads, it says that the reference number might show it, here are my numbers:



CPL: 2175

Engine: 56315160

Ref: 53040141



Does that ref number mean it's a 53 block?

Yep checked mine last night and the big ol 53 was right there on the block. I guess I am a member of that particular club!!

When I first looked I saw some numbers on the block. If I remember correctly there were 4-5 numbers. I thought Great mine is not a 53 block. Then I lifted my head just a litter and there plain as day was a big ol 53 . Really hard to miss.

its not a big deal. most that cracked from what i have heard where in heavy duty app's like buses etc.
