Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Did the 12v's have 53's?

I would check the engine myself, but I can't... it several hundred miles away.



I do know that the truck was purchased in Dec 96 though.



Any more thoughts on those ID numbers or the purchase date?

Looks like I'm in too! Popped under there today, driver's side just above the oil pan, toward the front, "53" bold as day. I don't think I'm going to start worrying about it now given what I put it through last year...

I assume the head is also of a lower quality? This is what I was trying to find out with my "Good Cylinder Head" thread...

There was a guy in here who worked for Cummins and posted that so far as he knew the "53" casting number is meaningless.



He said that a series of engine block numbers including ones with the '53' as well as ones without were the only cases of a thin casting. In other words he was saying that so far as Cummins is concerned only a certain bunch of blocks in a sequence of numbers MIGHT have a problem.



Does anyone remember that guy or know how to find his posts? It was during my first exposure to this issue but I'm not sure that it was also the first time it was brought up in here.

My '97 has a #53 block.

I have a 97. my block reads 1126A left side bottom near front of the block.

I bought mine in Aug. 97. I looked on both sides of the block and no 53. phew
