Did the dealer rip me of?

I finally got my '98 in for service b/c it kept roasting headlight switches when the A/C was on. I had heard there was a recall out for this problem, but my dealer said no. They blamed the constant roasting of swtiches on the fact that I had my 3 Isspro gauges hooked onto the same circuit as my marker lamps.



They solved the problem by switching the lights to the dimmer wire, giving me a new wiring harness (the old one was quite melted) and a new switch. Total cost: $500.



My burning question is that often times, when I put in a new switch, it would last for a month or so, even though I always drive around with my headlights on. ONLY when I turned on the A/C did the switch begin to roast. After it started to roast, it would roast whenever the headlights were on. So did I get ripped off or is this a real reason for roasting headlight switches?

Bob- The big cost was in the 3 hr shop charge. Can't beleive a wiring harness is that much of a pain, but I guess it is.

Hate to tell you this but DC had a problem with the old style pull switch burning out. Its the rheostat which adjusts the dash light brightness which gets hot. Acts just like a coil resistor. They went to a different design in 99. I cant see where adding 3 more 194 light bulbs would fry the switch

You still in CO? Why didn't you buy the harness call? We probably could have gotten some of the guys together to help out. I betcha with a couple of guys and a case of beer we could have had that harness up and running in no time...

I didn't think about getting some guys together. Esch... that would have not only saved me a lot of dough, it would have been fun as well! Bummer! Next time something like this comes up, I won't hestitate to ask. Likewise, if you have something going on down your way and you are getting some guys together, let me know and I'll c'mon down!

Well... speaking of which, if you know anybody that knows how change out the fluids in the differential... I got 2 trucks I gotta do.



I got the fluid. . but not the knowledge, nor the tools.

I also agree with Brolin. No way did those gauge illumination lamps fry the loom and switch. I bet you still have the super glue stuck on your hands and ankles. Well the good news is when it fails again they will fix under warr.

The diffs are easy, easier than changeing the oil and filter.

the dealer took you for a ride . but that's fairly cheap if 500 was the whole bill , an underdash harness has to be close to 500 -1000 alone for the part ... what harness did they replace ?



kev , pop the covers , let it drain , use brake cleaner to rinse out bottom of the housing , goop on the covers and refill ... go to sears and buy yourself a 200 piece tool kit my boy ... and a drain pan ...
