Good question- I'd have to look back at one of my old service manauls. It's been quite some time since doing any diff work on the chevy's but I do believe you are correct. "C" clips held the axles on non- floaters at the diff, while the floating axles were attached mechanically at the outter hub.



Back to our trucks with discs on the rear: Can the rotors come off like the front rotors of front wheel drive cars?
 
I don't know about the disc brakes on Rams.



I used to break axles on an old Chevy hot rod I had so I remember the C clips on it.
