As the availability of Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) has been talked about, I've watched the various discussions about what it would do. One of the thoughts was that ULSD would have a higher detergency, and would clean out the fuel tank and system. Dutifully, I replaced my fuel filter more often.
After a couple of tanks of ULSD (probably initially LSD being diluted with ULSD), a very strange thing happened. My fuel gauge started working, and working accurately. Not only did the gauge start to behave, it behaved properly when reading from the sender on either tank. As my wife's dog might say, that really gave me pause.
My truck has two tanks. The original, and a Transfer-Flow Aft-Axle tank I installed in 1998. The senders on both tanks started acting up in about 2002. By acting up, I mean that they got really pessimistic about the fuel levels. The Transfer-Flow's sender was the worst, but not by much. Since I had two tanks, and I knew about how many miles I could get out of each, I didn't bother with the time and money needed to put in new senders. It drove my wife crazy, though. (It's because she doesn't drive it regularly. )
Strangely, after filling up in 2004 at a high volume pump in rural Missouri (just across the line from Opolis, Kansas), the Transfer-Flow sender worked fine for about two months. (I hadn't had to fill the main tank as much. ) What I figured had happened was that the high velocity of fuel rushing in cleaned off some of whatever gunk was causing the problem.
So, returning to my original rhetorical question: Has the use of a few tanks of ULSD seemed to resurrect fuel senders for anyone else? :-laf
