Did you purchase Dealer Paint Sealant on your Ram ?

Fellow Rammers,



I was wondering how many (what %) of Dodge truck owners made the decision to pay for the "Dealer 'teflon' Paint Sealant" package that is commonly offered upon purchase?



My truck purchased in 1997 at a popular Idaho Dodge dealer was proposed to have it "installed" for about $ 300, which I declined, as I had a better option (I can mention why, later).



So if you don't mind sharing your experience, here's the question:



Did your Dodge dealer offer you their "Teflon Paint Sealant Package' ?



If so, did you purchase or decline ?



What price did you pay?



Were your satisfied with it?



I've had extensive experince in this area, I can mention more details later, but for now I'd be very curious to hear fellow TDR' ers thoughts and experiences on this matter.

why would i want a paint sealer with a clear coat anyway?

I declined to buy it when I bought my '91 - they screwed up and gave it the treatment anyway (at THEIR expense!), and my paint after 11 years is essentially as good as new - it sits outside 24/7, and I use Zipwax when I DO wash it - see pointer in sig...

Instructed them to put none of their branding on it or anything, just remove the plastic wrapping and do a pre-delivery inspection.



I use Colinite 885 Paste Fleet Wax on my paint and love it!

A tip I got out of the PSR and one I am most grateful for.

They did'nt offer it to me either, but I would have said no anyway. If they would have done something like this, then they might have seen they left the plastic on the roof. I drove it for a week before I found it.

Don't buy it!!! This is one of the biggest rip-offs a dealer has. It is nothing more than a coat of wax that runs you big dollars.

I would never pay for it, however when I bought my 2001 with bright metallic silver, I negotiated to have the paint sealer and the under-coating applied for no extra cost.



Don't know if it would have made a difference without it, but my truck was out in the weather all winter and it still looks brand new.



Would I do it again? Like I said, only if I don't have to pay for it.

I work for a new car dealer and I hope no one falls for this sales gimmick. That's all it is, a gimmick, designed to fatten the wallets of the finance manager when he's having you sign your paperwork. A $300 wax job is all you are getting.

Ditto, except I used to work for a dealer.



Undercoating is a good idea as the frames are painted and not treated like the body panels are to resist corrosion. It also seals all the little gaps aroung the seat bolts and such. However, don't get it at the dealer. Go to a rust proof shop and ask "How much if I pay cash with no warrantee?" It's usually around $100.

When I purchased my 2001 at the popular I daho dealer the coating was part of the deal. Bought it at dealers cost plus $170. I was a fireman for over 30years and have waxed more truck than I want to remember. What ever they put on my Ram is super. Its sat out in the calif sun for two years and I havent had to wax it yet!! I cant believe it.

Paid for the whole protection package. Interior,(carpet,leather,trim,etc. ) Outer,(paint) & under-coating. Cost $250. 00. Warranty for 5 years. If a stain,bird droppings, road tar,paint,etc. etc. cannot be removed with soap & water , the dealer will repair/clean free of charge. This is from BBC Dodge in Seattle.

I was told the paint is not covered under warranty unless you purchase this stupid sealant. Now I am told with this sealant my paint is under warranty for the life of the truck. At least thats what my paperwork says. Not sure if I believe it or not, but when my dads paint starting coming off his fenders I decided to go ahead and purchase this cheesy a$$ sealant, my dealer did a poor job applying it (streaks etc. ) , had to take it back and have it reapplied. DO NOT purchase the sealant... .....

The factory warranty should cover paint independently of any warranty offered additionally for using their sealant package. Basically, you'd have more protection, from both the factory & extra "sealant warranty".



They sell new vehicle buyers on the idea of protecting the very expensive rig with their excellent, but expensive sealant package.



If you saw how easy it was, you'd ask if you could just buy some & do it yourself and save the $$$$.



I know this because we offer a similar package, but not through New Car Dealers, but to the do it yourselfers.



One thing: Be sure to go back each year for another coating, like their warranty probably advises, because it won't last anything like 3 or 5 years. They may charge an hour labor or so each year to re do the sealant... ... it's that or avail yourself of a D-I-Y kit.



We put in for an Classified Ad to offer a TDR group special, but it's not listed yet.....



But I agree with you, why pay too much, the truck is expensive as it is!

I understan that, but they told me it is a one time application. And it well last the life of the truck, like an idiot I bought it. I asked about return trips each year because we do that with our Honda and the dealer told me not necessary. We dont reapply it anyway. OH well my fault. Live and learn. My wax jobs keep it much nicer anyway.
