It's cool to see these big boys finally in action. 12,000 gallons of slurry will certainly put a dent in a fire (if they actually hit where they were supposed to - that one looked like a majority miss). I wonder how it handles as it looses 100,000lbs in 5 seconds?



Did you notice the wing tips flapping in the turbulance? Those guys had a rough ride!
 
Yep, the idea of a slurry drop is to put it just ahead of the fire. Right along the top of that ridgline was probably the intended spot, where the fire progression would have slowed down naturally as it crested the hill. I think he was a little to the left and the retardant fell longer than expected into the valley. By the time it hit foliage it would have been too thinly dispersed to be effective.
