I'm new to diesel engines and have some questions regarding my '95 ram 2500 Cummins.

1) How smooth is normal running for this engine? I do notice more vibration than I am used to.

2) What are the diagnostic procedures that you use with these engines? For instance, if you develop a miss how do you determine which cylinder is responsible?

How long does the P-7100 injection pump last? My rig has 213000 miles on it and I don't know whether it has been replaced.

Is there a dummies manual that would tell me how this injection pump and injectors work?

It could be that your valves may need to be adjusted or something like that. The p-pump goes for a very long time. Some trucks i have heard about have 500,000 miles on them and still great. I have 223,000 miles and have no problems with the pump. The p-pump is very similar to an engine. Instead of of moving air, it moves fuel. It has pistons (plungers), valve (delivery valve), fuel control (rack) and so on.

Welcome to the world of diesels! You will never be the same! Matter of fact, you are now trapped and there is no way out!!! "More Power" is your mantra and #2 is the incense in this religion!

1. The vibrations you noticed are POWER!!! Enjoy them!

2. If you are VERY careful you can loosen the injector line at the injector one at a time to see which one the "miss" doesn't change much on. DO NOT LET SQUIRTING FUEL GET NEAR THE SKIN! INJURY OR DEATH CAN OCCUR WHEN FUEL ENTERS THE SKIN UNDER HIGH PRESSURE!
