Ron,

PM Jleonard. He took his 1st gen through and may be able to give you some insight. I've been told that they do not look for the cat.

Ron,

NO

I have been through CT emmissions 3 times since '94. They don't check for the Cat. I believe federal law requires it, but state law does not.

EDIT: this was for the old test. I have not been to the new test yet.

Your engine is stock and it failed? That's unusual. Do you make a lot of smoke?

Can you describe the test procedure used?

The truck is not exactly stock. (See updated signature) Only makes considerable amounts of smoke if you put the pedal to the floor. A little when going through the gears. This is what I was told they do for emmission's test. Put the pedal to the floor, bring engine to governor limit, and hold for 5 seconds, and take reading. They did this 9 times. Maybe someone on here knows more, or how to make it pass.

I place a block of wood under the floor mat to limit the pedal travel. I don't want the inspector rev it to 4K. I also back off on the star wheel and slide the AFC cover all the way back. Last year I passed at 25%. This year might be a problem with the #4 plate though. Doesn't CT use the same test as NY, a snap test?

We have the same test here in Phoenix. I pass every year with my setup. Last year I didn't even adjust anything before the test. My plate is full forward as is my AFC housing with 370 injectors. The key to passing is to do the test yourself. Tell the smoke monkey that you do this all the time and you'll watch the screen that tells when to floor it. I ease into the go-peddle instead of mashing it to the floor and the smoke is very much decreased. I am about to go through again this month so I'll let you know what happens this year. It is my opinion that this is nothing more than a way to take $29 per year out of my wallet.

Ron ,

They have the emissions testing here and I have been thru it twice (every other year), both times it was easy. They have also always commented that my truck is so "clean". On the ppm the max is 10 and my truck only blows a . 1, which is as low as the machine measures. They never look under the truck (thank goodness), and really just look that the VIN matches the registration, and for some reason look at the fuel cap?

Also when they conduct the test, they keep me in the cab and the truck is just sitting there idling. I give them $20. 00 and move on.

Unhooking the boost line will prevent the AFC from allowing full fueling. You'll never get to the cam plate and make much less smoke if you make any at all.

Since smoke is what they're looking for, this should help you pass.

On a snap test, there's no boost so unhooking anything is wasting your time. I took the test again yesterday and passed again with a 4% opacity. Of course they took my $29. 50 again:rolleyes: This test is a joke and nothing more than a punishment for buying a fuel-efficient, powerful vehicle.

I went last week and they put it on the rollers - checked for particulate at 30MPH. 0. 4% out of 20% allowable. I did disconnect the AFC boost but I ran through with 300's.

Ron - did you go for a retest yet? Pass?

I took a ride with vssman and was there when he tested... . they only put him on the rollers... ... the same place did a snap test on mine in November.

When he tested mine, he only brought the engine up to about 1400 rpm... and very slowly, not a true "snap". The tester said he did not believe in floorboarding someone else's vehicle.

The place we tested at is Superior Automotive in Bethlehem. I chose them originally because they allowed me to stand right next to the truck when they test... most places make you watch in another room (out of earshot) via a video monitor.

The tester said that ALL diesels pass... then he said there was one he had to fail... . it was an old Mercedes that literally filled the garage with smoke.

I would recommend anyone from CT to take their truck to Superior for testing... . it's a little out of the way, but the guy who tests is clean, professional, and likes diesels.
