Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) miss and smoke when cold

I just went for a re-test. I unhooked the boost line as suggested by others. The truck produced considerable smoke and as expected, FAILED. Now the reading is up to 50. I was told with the line unhooked, it would fly right through. Guess I need to learn more about how these things work for myself. I don't think it was only because of the way the test was done, the truck did smoke when accelerating, or with a load. They did not put the truck on the rollers reason was 8800 lbs. whatever that has to do with anything??

That's baffling that with the AFC line unhooked, you got more smoke. I would even go to say it's impossible.

I have a Valet Switch, so I drive around 90% of the time with my AFC "unhooked". There is virtually no smoke at any RPM.

The rocker stays on the AFC dog in unhooked mode, so the pump can't increase the fuel. Unless you have an internal problem w/ your P-7100? But then it probably would'nt run right.

Are you POSITIVE you unhooked the AFC boost signal line and not the waste gate line?

If yes, I would go see Ted Jennetty. He could take a look at it.

Edit above post

RonsRam,

The above post was written because I thought you ran on the rollers and failed.

You may need to move the AFC housing back towards the firewall as far as it will go. This will allow even less fueling.

I think alot of the problem is you don't get any boost without a load on the engine. This is whats causing excessive smoke.

Ron,

How far are you from Walpole, MA?

Give Scott a call and tell him you need to pass emissions in CT. Scott did my clutch. Nice guy and very knowledgable about the Dodge/Cummins. He'll hook you up. Don't fool around any more on a hit or miss fix.

Thanks for the reply's. I am going to bring it to Ted Jannetty as soon as I get time when he is available. He knows of an emmission station near him, so I'll go get tested right after he's done. Thanks again, I'll keep you posted. Ron

Does all of Ariz have to smog test or just certain counties? I will be moving to Ariz in 18 mos and need to know if my cat needs to move too.

Only a few counties require the tests. Phoenix for sure and maybe Tuscan. The last time I went through I asked if they look for the cat and they said yes. They didn't check. I watched them very closely.

They definitely checked for a cat on mine. Two of the techs argued for a while as to whether it was a resonator or a cat.

i took mine to superior in bethlehem, ct also. i passed with . 9% smoke. i turned my afc tight, and put my 160 injectors back in becuase i didnt want to risk failing. i had my truck straightpiped and he gave me a hard time about that but he ended up letting me through. i guess ill have to buy a fake muffler. :-laf

I have a 97 straight piped and they never looked under the truck. However unlike Todd I was not so lucky and they made me mash the peddle to the floor and watched the tach outside before the real test. With my 3gsk the eng went way past 3k, oops. They would not let me run the test and told me my gov was broken  and I should get it fixed.

Went home, put a board under the carpet, and a few zip ties on the exposed part of the throttle cable right at the injection pump. When I mashed it then the zip ties held the pump back and it stopped right at 3K and with the carpet raised it looked like I was to the floor. :-laf

Just to be sure it was not a fluke that they looked at my truck before the test I went to another testing station and the same thing, they wanted to see me floor it before I went into the test, however this time it stopped right at 3k.

Went in for the test and passed.

I thought I read in a thread somewhere, that there is a published maximum rpm for the Cummins without a load. Something like 1900 rpm if I recall.

Seems kinda unreasonable to let some shmo play yamaha with your Turbo Diesel and shoot it to 3000rpm.

Anyone know any actual facts?

Thanks

STANDARD practise for checking a marine Cummins (or any marine engine) is to do a "high Idle" test.

The one I repowered my boat with was the 270 hp version... high idle checked out at 3050 rpm. Engine had maybe 5 minutes time on it... . just enough to insure no leaks and get the temp to 140 ish. Then the throttle was burried and the rpm recorded.

Spec for the 370 marine is 3300-3400.

Standard practise... won't hurt a thing.

Cummins actually says to calibrate the tachometer that way... . because high idle is repeatable (unless the gov springs destruct) thoughout the engine's life.

To legally avoid the emisions test in CT, up the GVW to #10,001, Anything over 10,000 does not have to go through emisions. And, in case your woundering, combination plate weight now goes up to 12,500. After that , your considered comercial. Basiaclly this keeps the knuckleheads(emissions testers) from flooring your truck for no reason othere then collecting $$.

Last time I got mine tested in Nov they ran it on the rollers. . no more snap test. I was more worried about them lugging it than over revving. The test is 30 mph and they were in 4th gear. That's where the 15. 6 hp came from... . that was the last time I was on a dyno... :-laf :-laf

I never touched any of the adjustments and it went thru with hardly a trace of anything.

Then I smogged them out as I left the parking lot. :-laf :-laf

Go to biodiesel.org. You have two locations showing at New Haven(Santa Energy) and Portland(Taylor Oil Co. ). My supplier carries Bio G 3000 B20. It definitely cuts smoke way down. It makes my #6 look stock. See biog-3000.com for specs and emissions reductions. We don't have testing yet but probably won't be long as the Columbia area is bad for smog at times.

I have been running B20 in two 12Vs for over 2 months with temps this week below 20 at night. No problem so far. A friend with the new D/A(650# torque) had a little stumble the coldest morning so far. He is probably going to have to mix his with #2.

Good luck!
