Diesel Exhaust Smell In Cab

Have new 2012 Ram 2500 HD Crew Cab w/Cummins. 4600 miles. Have exhaust smell coming through vent system. Seems to be a intermittent problem. Trying to figure out what makes it occur. Have had it happen when truck is cold and drove a mile down roadway, drove 5 hours on expressway and got off an exit ramp to short trips around town and when you stop at a traffic signal. You only seem to smell fumes when truck is stopped. Smell lasts for a short period of time and then is gone. Been to Dealer several times and have left truck for dealer to drive, but it won't do it when at dealer!! Any suggestions.

I think your smelling the Regeneration taking place, I have had the same smell twice in the month I have owned mine, that is my guess, maybe someone who has had theres longer can confirm that

Thats what it is. Still makes no sense how dumping raw fuel can be better for the enviroment, but thats another rant for another day. Only suggestion I can come up with that helps a little is bump the A/C off of fresh air to recirculating air. Helps a little. I also bought a cab fresh filter from genos. It solved the problem on my first 2011. I haven't put it on my 2011 HO yet but will be doing so soon.

You are smelling the fumes from the regen. That is why you only smell it sometimes. Best way to describe it is smells like charcoal lighter fluid burning. As was said, put it in recirc if you smell it. It will go away after a short time idling after stopping as it usually will stop the regen process once the truck stops.
