Hi,
Need some information, will diesel fuel dissolve the galvanized material on galvanized pipe and cause filter or other problems.
The reason I ask this is ever since I hooked up my fuel pressure sending units with galvanized thread pipe I have had touble with my truck stalling.
Maybe the problem is not related but maybe some one can give me the official rule on this. Ron

The amount of galvanized steel amounts to one 90 degree elbow and a one inch nipple in 1/8 npt. I will leave them in for now and see if anyone else has a recomondation.

I can see galvanized maybe causing a problem if you had a tank that was galvanized, but a few fittings shouldn't cause any problems besides the fact that the cheap Chinese fittings that are around nowadays tend to flake off their coating. Use brass fittings, they are easy to come by and will cause no problems. I think your stalling is an entirely different problem, if you are sucking air you will usually have starting problems. Don't use teflon tape with diesel, it tends to leak and can cause plugging, especally when you remove a fitting because it is so hard to get off. You're better off to use anti-sieze.

The following is an exerpt from a government direction on diesel storage.

NFPA-30 gives further recommendations on use of UL listed tanks, vent piping and vent capacity, tank openings, and drainage. Reactive metals such as galvanized steel , zinc, and copper should not be used in fuel system construction as these types of metals can serve as an oxidation catalyst with diesel fuel.

Fuel oxidation is one of the primary contributors to poor fuel. I wouldn't think that what you've done is what's causing your stalling problem unless you are getting air in the system. I would take the galvanized out and go to stainless or another high grade steel.

Perfect timing for my installation of a 32 gallon aluminum marine tank in the bed of my truck. I am to the point where yesterday I though I had all the fittings needed until reading this topic. I had all the fittings wrapped in teflon - will change that to anti-sieze. Also had 3 galvenized fittings that will be changed to brass or bronze. The fittings can all be found in the 2001 West Marine catalog on page 540. As usual, this site is the best!

Another issue of galvanized stuff is that it is a zinc plating. I have been told that zinc is hard on the injection pump innards. Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc. Wherever possible I use plain cast iron or steel pipe and fittings. I got a forged plain steel elbow as I didn't trust cast iron for a strength-related piece in the event of an accident. I don't know how real the zinc issue is, but I try to avoid it in diesel fuel systems.
