DieselLady - IIRC you moved to CO. Central Motive Power does rebuilds and supplies a fair portion of the dealers and shops in Denver they also have a sister store in Pueblo, though I can not remember the name just yet.

I worked there for a few years. Their fuel shop is top notch, and they don't cut corners. They are where I send my side work that I either don't have time to do, or don't have the needed tools.

To the OP - yes, if the key did get shoved back a little, it can take a while to wear the seal, or have the shaft off center and trash the seal all together. Also possible you bought a truck with a not so good VP replacement.

Hey Sticks, Ya I was in Colorado, but moved back to Calif and opened my shop up again. After working for myself for 20 years, just couldn't go back to being an employee. Also I missed the trucks way too much. ")
I have a small shop out here in Bakersfield, Diesel Power systems, that has been around for decades. Going to give him a call this morning and see what he says. If that doesn't work, may try Industrial injection.
But I am still not sure if they can fix this without having that bench tester. There are only a few shops that have one. so that is what the problem is.

Ouch, I'm going out now to pull the breather, nut, & look @ the keyway with a mirror.

If the key looks correctly installed, I'm going for the crossover tubes.

Proflow

My key is about 3/16 back on the taper from the threads.

It looks as though this is correct.

Can anyone please confirm this ?

Looks like the keyway slot doesn't go all the way to the threads as far as I can tell.

Thanks---Proflow

I called Blue Chip & they confirmed the key is susposed to be where it is.

They sugested pulling the crossover tubes & will likely find a bad o-ring on 5 or 6.

He also said beings its an 01' it has the hardened tubes in it so likely its the o-rings.

I'll know & post back soon---Proflow

Good news/bad newss

"If fuel is coming out of the breather tube then your crankcase if filled to the valve cover, and the dipstick does not support that. Take the hose off of the round housing on the top of the timing cover and then unscrew the round housing and see if you can detect and liquid there. Start the engine and see if there is anything coming out. It sounds more like the the water drain from the fuel filter canister then the crankcase breather.

Kevin"

I should have stopped & listened right here. Man do i feel STUPID.

Today I swapped out the crossover tubes (thanks Hoss) & checked the front of the pump while running.

When I fired it back up It poured every bit as much as before. darn it.

Then It was quite obviouse the fuel was coming from somewhere else & I had my head in my ***.

Yep, the water drain on the filter can was pouring & ran down across & cought the 5/8 hose before it ended. I gotta tell ya, it sure did look as though it was coming straight out of that hose.

I spose its good the engine isnt hurt, just my pride. Oh well.

I just pulled & cleaned the housing. Then it got JB quick in the drain. No more drain for now.

Thanks for all the help guys, lesson learned

Glad you found the simple stupid thing. Embarrassment is soooo much cheaper than a VP.

DieselLady - That was an awful short stay. Best of luck to you in Cali.

Could you have that case Tig welded ?

Dont listen to me, i just spent 8 hrs on a 1 hr fix !

I should go back to drinking, at least then i had an excuse.

Proflow

Welding might work. Might not either. Either way you have to completely disassemble the pump. Why not just put a fresh case in it and be done?

Glad you got your truck sorted. One thing for certain, THAT won't ever happen again.

Ya you would have to pull it all apart, Diesel all over it right now. Not worth the hassle. Some times, TIME is worth more than money.
So they guys at Diesel Power Systems in Bakersfield CA are AWESOME. They are taking it to their other shop and said they may have a one day turn around. If so I will have it back by Friday. Sweet. Now that is what I call SERVICE!!! ")

10-4 on the time vs. money.

I didnt know you could get that case swapped out that quick.

You have a lucky customer.

Proflow

Yep he is lucky. It was a coincidence, that the main man from the Whittier store was in Bakersfield. So he just took the pump with him and will have it worked on tomorrow. I would say that is pretty darn lucky. ")
I also think it's pretty strange that 2 trucks had a pucking problem at the same time, just 2 different problems.

Well we aren't so lucky. Here is a pic of the hole where the pressurized fuel comes in to lube the shaft. Unfortunately the key hit the housing right by it, so I didn't think it would work just putting a new seal in. So we are doing a new case. To the tune of $500. Well it is better than $1100 so that is good. And much better to know it is fixed right.

WOW!! I ain't ever... ... how did they get it mashed like that?!?! I can't believe it didn't strip the threads off the end of the shaft before it tightened down..... Who put it on there? Dang, they must have used an impact wrench to put it on!!!
