testing diesel

Power Stroke bad fuel pump or bad diesel ?

We were in the Mountains this week and my wife kept telling me she could smell diesel Fumes. I noticed the truck had blue smoke right after start up and for a while after running down the road but it quit that. Any ideas on the Fumes????One other thing, The truck is completely warmed up. I shut it off, Went into a Diner and came back in about 30 min and started the truck and the Heater grids started cycling again, They stopped after going down the road. . Any Ideas?? Doc.

Most likely you're smelling the breather-bottle hanging off the front of the engine. It has a tendancy to stink up the cab when the air is on. The blue smoke until warm is normal. Dunno about the grid heaters, how cold was it outside?

Check the seal at the rear of your hood, they have a tendency to come off allowing smells from the engine compartment to enter the vent intakes at the base of the windshield. Your heaters should have come on at 34°, they go off if you exceed some weird number like 17 mph though. The sensor for the grid heaters runs off the temp of the intake air and calls for heat when the intake temp drops below 50°.
