Love my 03.5
I love my MY03. 5, 4x4 Quad Cab LWB Laramie with a 3. 73 rear end gear.
I have about a 30-minute drive from home to work all local highways with speeds from 50mph to 55mph.
So my fuel economy is just above 22mpg. I've tracked my fuel economy since I got the truck new. Its been steadily improving, and is now above 19. 5mpg (since day one!). And in case your wondering, my truck is 14 months old, and just turned 24,500 miles.
I have also found that my truck doesn't like Interstate driving, actually anything above 1800 rpm.
I have a Cummins RoadRelay4 Installed in my truck, and can view instantaneous fueling. Running 60mph (about 1800 rpm), on even grade unloaded I'm running around 28mpg. Bump that speed up to 65mph on an even grade unloaded, and I'm running 20mpg. On my drive to work, at 50mph, I’m running about 35mpg.
If I could only get a lower rear end gear or a 7th higher gear, and I'm sure that Interstate driving would be well over 25mpg.
I have a buddy that drives a commercial truck with basically the same engine, and couldn't understand why my fuel economy numbers were so much better. I explained that his truck, unloaded was much heavier than mine (which weights 7,625lbs unloaded), and that his rear end gear was much higher, which was causing his engine to run at a much higher rpm.
You’ve got to love your Cummins.
